Early season lotus is in high demand, limited quantity, must order in advance to buy
Every May and June, the lotus in West Lake begins its most beautiful season. This year, many tourists eagerly waited for hours at the lotus pond from early morning, but not everyone was able to buy West Lake lotus due to the limited quantity.
West Lake lotus is in high demand at the beginning of the season, limited quantity, must be ordered in advance |
From early morning, many lotus buyers came to West Lake and stood ready to freely choose the most satisfactory flowers. The number of lotus flowers harvested by the lotus pond owner in the first days of the season was very small, but most buyers bought in large quantities.
A lotus grower in Tay Ho district said that his family has had about 2 hectares of lotus for more than ten years, and since mid-May every year they have started harvesting the first batches of lotus flowers to serve customers.
This is the beginning of the season so the amount of lotus flowers is very limited and cannot meet the purchasing needs of many people. This year, the lotus crop is good, there are more flowers than previous years, however, it is only the beginning of the season but there are still many people coming to buy lotus flowers.
A consumer in Dong Anh said that their family uses lotus flowers to scent tea, so every time they have lotus flowers, they have to buy a large quantity of 200 - 300 flowers per day.
According to them, even though they are regular customers, they still have to call to order lotus flowers in advance, because the output of lotus flowers is the same, but the number of customers buying lotus flowers is increasing day by day. Although the number of people buying lotus flowers has increased compared to before, the price of lotus flowers is still the same as previous years, only about 10-12 thousand VND/flower.
Prolonged heat, Ben Tre coconut prices triple
Since the beginning of May, although the first rains of the season have occurred in the Mekong Delta provinces, including Ben Tre, the impact of the prolonged heat wave has caused the price of green coconuts to increase.

According to traders, the main reason for the high price of green coconuts is the prolonged hot weather combined with drought and salinity, so the demand for fresh coconuts for drinking water in the market has increased.
The current price of coconuts purchased at the garden is up to 120,000 - 130,000 VND/dozen (dozen of 12 fruits). According to gardeners, the current price is 3 times higher than the same period last year, the highest price ever. The output of coconuts is not enough to supply the market in Ben Tre province and neighboring provinces. The main reason is the impact of the prolonged heat and recent drought and salinity.
On average, each coconut garden will harvest once a month, each tree usually has 2 bunches, but recently half of them were damaged, so the amount harvested is very small, leading to very high prices because there are not enough coconuts.
Agricultural product prices today, May 31, 2024: Sweet potato prices doubled
Sweet potato prices are doubling compared to the same period last year, up to more than 1.8 million VND/quintal, helping many farmers in Vinh Long earn a profit of 400 - 500 million VND per hectare.
Farmers in Thanh Trung Hamlet, Thanh Dong Commune (Binh Tan District) said that last week, their family harvested 4 hectares (1 hectare = 1,000m²) of Japanese purple sweet potatoes, with an average yield of 70 quintals/hectare (1 quintal = 60kg). With a selling price of 1.1 million VND/quintal, they earned over 300 million VND. After deducting expenses, they still made a profit of about 35 million VND per hectare.

According to them, this year due to unfavorable weather, there are more small potatoes than usual, but there are still not enough to sell to traders. Traders come to the fields to weigh them on the spot, buy everything, and only throw away rotten and wormy potatoes.
Many people said that currently, Japanese purple potatoes cost 1.2 million VND/quintal, double the price compared to the same period last year. After deducting expenses, farmers earn a profit of 400 - 500 million VND/ha. Notably, farmers have not yet harvested in full force. This season, they planted 1ha of potatoes and will harvest in about 2 months.
Traders in Thanh Thuan hamlet, Thanh Trung commune said that the price of sweet potatoes has increased due to strong demand in the domestic and export markets. Meanwhile, the supply has decreased, so farmers are not planting as much as before.
Binh Dinh sand mango crop fails, low yield
In recent years, many mango gardens in Cat Hanh commune (Phu Cat, Binh Dinh) have not bloomed, causing farmers to suffer severe crop failures. On top of that, this year mangoes are very unsold.
Currently, the commune has more than 120 hectares of concentrated mango plantations. In previous years, mango was a tree that brought wealth to local people, many senior mango garden owners in Tan Hoa Nam village earned a profit of 300 - 500 million VND each year. However, in the past 3 years, most of the mango acreage in Cat Hanh commune has suffered from severe crop failure. If the mangoes were in bloom and heavy rain and strong winds caused the flowers to fall, causing a crop failure, it would be a given, but this year the weather has been sunny for a long time, but for some reason the mangoes still refuse to flower.

Farmers here said that this year the harvest was bad, the mango yield was not much, but what was even sadder was that the price did not increase, only 28,000 VND/kg of grade 1 mango, grade 2 mango only sold for 16,000 VND/kg. In addition, this year the purchasing power was very weak.
Every year when mango season comes, traders come to the gardens to buy and sell. However, this year there are no traders, and if there are any buyers, they buy very small quantities.
