Last week, the central exchange rate increased rapidly when it continuously increased in the first 4 sessions of the week with a total increase of 109 VND. However, in the last session of last week, the central exchange rate cooled down when it decreased by 5 VND.
In the first trading session of this week, the central exchange rate continued to be adjusted down sharply.
The central exchange rate announced by the State Bank today is 23,897 VND/USD, down 49 VND compared to last weekend.
Applying a 5% margin, commercial banks are allowed to trade at today's ceiling rate of VND25,173/USD and the floor rate of VND22,783/USD.
The reference buying rate is still maintained by the State Bank of Vietnam at 23,440 VND/USD. The reference selling rate today was adjusted down 52 VND compared to last weekend, listed at 25,041 VND/USD.
Similarly, the USD/VND exchange rate at commercial banks today continued to decrease from the trading session at the end of last week (August 18).
Specifically, at 11:25 a.m. on August 21, Vietcombank listed the USD price at 23,590-23,960 VND/USD (buy - sell), down 10 VND/USD in both buying and selling compared to the morning of August 18.
At the same time, Vietinbank traded USD at 23,530 VND/USD (buy) and 23,950 VND/USD (sell), down 25 VND/USD in both directions compared to the morning of August 18.
Techcombank buys USD at 23,599 VND/USD and sells at 23,950 VND/USD. Compared to the morning of August 18, the USD price at Techcombank this morning decreased by 25 VND/USD in both buying and selling.
Sacombank listed the USD price at 23,565-23,940 VND/USD (buy - sell), down 10 VND/USD in both directions compared to the morning of August 18.
While the USD price in banks cools down, in the free market, the USD price still tends to increase.
The USD price this morning (August 21) on the free market was commonly traded around 24,040-24,140 VND/USD (buy - sell), an increase of 140 VND/USD in both buying and selling compared to the previous session.
It can be seen that the USD selling price on the free market is much higher than the USD selling price at commercial banks, nearly 200 VND higher.
In the international market, the USD price fluctuated little today. At 11:47 a.m. today (August 21, Vietnam time), the US Dollar Index (DXY) - measuring the greenback's fluctuations against 6 major currencies - was at 103.37 points, unchanged from the previous session.
