The sleep tourism market is estimated to grow 8% to reach $400 billion by 2028, according to a US market study. Around the world , hotels are racing to offer better sleep experiences to travelers.

In London, The Beaumont Hotel has a 700-square-foot suite designed by artist Antony Gormley, featuring dark wood paneling, no TV, and no phone signal to ensure maximum focus on sleep. The bed is the only piece of furniture in the bedroom. The room costs nearly $800 a night.

In Ireland, Dromoland Castle has appointed Ryan Logue as its “chief sleep officer.” Logue’s expertise includes advising on everything from sleep-inducing scents to room temperature. Last year, the property was named Tripadvisor’s “Best Hotel for Sleep.”

Meanwhile, The Alpina Gstaad hotel in Switzerland also identified "sleep as one of the biggest health issues of our time." The property offers new "Sleep Suites" rooms that include air-conditioned beds and additional amenities such as blue-light blocking glasses.

Hyatt hotels in New Zealand and Australia offer a $50 sleep special, which includes bath salts, an eye mask, teas, and specialty oils. Meanwhile, The Dylan in Amsterdam offers a special mattress experience called FreshBeds. The mattress is temperature-controlled, equipped with a medical-grade HEPA filter, ensuring clean air. The mattress alone costs $16,000, while the room rate is more than $1,300.

Max Dijkema, Marketing Director of The Dylan, says sleep is part of a healthy lifestyle trend. With a good night’s sleep, people can rest and take care of themselves more. Travel sleep is also becoming a full-blown business model, from sleep coaches, room sprays, exclusive furniture to choosing the best beds.

“It’s a smart marketing approach to a sleep problem that many people have,” Dijkema said. With this service, hotels can sell a variety of services from technical equipment, care therapies and additional cooperation with bed manufacturers. In addition to profit, the sleep service helps improve the hotel’s image.

While hotels are investing in sleep care, Floris Wouterson, a sleep expert, says hotel services should not be viewed as “the solution to all sleep problems.” According to Wouterson, guests should view these services as tools rather than solutions.

"It shouldn't be the case that sleeping in a hotel is better than sleeping at home. It means there are some issues at home that need to be addressed," Wouterson said, but added that "it's good that getting a good night's sleep is a concern when booking a hotel."
