Reducing plastic waste from awareness to action

People of Tan Tru commune implement a model of collecting scrap metal and exchanging it for gifts, both to reduce plastic waste and to share and support some families in difficult circumstances.

Small work - big meaning

Due to their convenience, plastic products are chosen by many consumers. However, these products have a short-term use, even in minutes or hours, but to process them takes decades, even hundreds of years and a lot of money. Plastic waste affects many aspects, causing blockage of drainage systems, polluting land, water and air... They have been and are direct agents causing pollution as well as posing a huge challenge in environmental management today.

Implementing the direction from the superiors as well as the initiative of the locality, in recent years, the province has focused on drastically implementing the restriction of plastic waste and plastic waste in the area with practical actions and deeds. Recently, in Tan Tru commune, in addition to promoting propaganda and mobilization, the locality has also implemented many meaningful and suitable models,... thereby contributing to raising people's awareness.

According to Ms. Nguyen Thi Hang (residing in Tan Tru commune), since participating in the Green House model of exchanging plastic waste for gifts, people have better understood the importance and meaning of gradually eliminating plastic waste, especially disposable plastic products.

People collect bottles and packaging, then bring them to the collection point to exchange for small gifts to give to families in more difficult circumstances. Although the action is small, it spreads a good lifestyle to everyone. Each person just needs to contribute a little effort, surely the living environment will become better and better.

In Can Giuoc commune, many good practices and meaningful activities are being carried out, contributing to reducing the amount of plastic waste. Many models have been widely deployed and maintained by the locality until now such as: exchanging plastic waste for necessities, exchanging scrap for gifts, launching environmental sanitation campaigns, using environmentally friendly products in daily life, etc.

Ms. Nguyen Cam Hong (living in Can Giuoc commune) shared: “Participating with local women in implementing the model of exchanging scrap for gifts, everyone clearly understands their own responsibilities. Every day, my family sorts waste, takes advantage of plastic bottles and brings them to the collection point, then sells them and uses the proceeds to help women in difficult circumstances. Although it is a small action, this is the way we are building a better living environment every day.”

Reduce plastic waste

The province has implemented many models and good practices to help call on the community to join hands in reducing plastic waste (the province has implemented source-based waste classification throughout the area).

Implementing Directive No. 33/CT-TTg dated August 20, 2020 of the Prime Minister on strengthening the management, reuse, recycling, treatment and reduction of plastic waste and Decision No. 175/QD-TTg dated February 5, 2021 approving the Project "Promoting propaganda on plastic waste prevention and control for the period 2021-2025", the Provincial People's Committee has issued many specific action plans and programs to synchronously deploy tasks and solutions throughout the province.

Departments, branches, organizations, localities and enterprises in the province have also promoted information and propaganda work in many forms such as: propaganda on the radio system from the province to the grassroots; through meetings; on social networking sites; using banners and propaganda slogans;...

In addition, the province continues to maintain and replicate a series of effective models in combating plastic waste, spreading green lifestyles, contributing to environmental protection, etc. Through the implementation process, propaganda, mobilization, collection, classification and treatment of plastic waste are promoted, creating positive spillovers in the community, agencies, schools and businesses.

Many models and movements of "anti-plastic waste" have been maintained and expanded, contributing to raising people's awareness in limiting the use of disposable plastic products and nylon bags that are difficult to decompose. It can be affirmed that now, preventing and combating plastic waste is not only a movement but has also become a habit of every person in the area.

According to Deputy Director of the Department of Agriculture and Environment Nguyen Tan Thuan, in addition to the achieved results, the work of preventing, combating and reducing plastic waste in the area still has certain limitations. The achieved results have not really gone into depth; propaganda work is still lacking in regularity, the form is not rich, the content is not close to reality; the collection, classification and recycling of plastic waste is still lacking in synchronization, has not formed a closed cycle; the participation of businesses and people in some areas is still limited, has not created a strong spread in the whole society;...

On that basis, the Provincial People's Committee's Staff Department issued Plan No. 7918/UBND-KTTC, dated November 6, 2025 on strengthening the management, reuse, recycling, treatment and reduction of plastic waste in Tay Ninh province. In particular, the Provincial People's Committee has assigned specific tasks to departments, branches, sectors and localities to effectively organize and implement, towards the goal of "Green - clean - beautiful Tay Ninh, no plastic waste".

“The Department of Agriculture and Environment is assigned by the Provincial People's Committee to act as the focal agency, preside over, coordinate with departments, branches, and localities to advise on implementation, guide, inspect, urge, propose solutions to remove difficulties and obstacles in the implementation process, and synthesize and report to the Provincial People's Committee on the implementation of Directive No. 33/CT-TTg of the Prime Minister according to regulations.

"Closely coordinate with press and media agencies, the Vietnam Fatherland Front Committee of the province in promoting propaganda, dissemination, and replication of models of waste classification at source, minimizing the use of disposable plastic products; spreading the message of environmental protection, raising awareness and changing people's behavior, and at the same time guiding and supporting the People's Committees of communes and wards to replicate effective community models" - Mr. Nguyen Tan Thuan informed./.
