Trading is gloomy, new securities accounts opened are down by half compared to August
After two consecutive months of maintaining over 300,000 accounts, the number of new securities accounts opened by domestic individuals has decreased sharply.

According to information from the Vietnam Securities Depository and Clearing Corporation (VSDC), the number of net domestic individual investor accounts opened (based on the difference between newly opened and closed accounts) only reached 158,212 accounts in September 2024, a decrease of 52% compared to the previous month. Thus, after two consecutive months of maintaining over 300,000 accounts, the number of new domestic individual securities accounts opened has decreased sharply again.
Meanwhile, domestic organizations opened only 90 new securities accounts in September, down 32% compared to the previous month. In the first 9 months of the year, domestic investors opened a total of more than 1.57 million new securities accounts, 4 times higher than the whole of 2023 (the year with the highest number of account closures). Domestic investors currently have a total of more than 8.8 million securities accounts (individuals account for 99.8%).
For the group of foreign investors, the number of newly opened accounts in September was 202, down 53 accounts compared to August 2024. Of which, foreign individual investors opened 180 new accounts, down 31%. Domestic institutional investors opened 22 new accounts while last month there were 7 net closed accounts. After the first 9 months of 2024, foreign investors opened a total of 1,822 new accounts, equal to 68% compared to the whole year of 2023.
The total number of securities accounts of domestic and foreign investors at the end of September was more than 8.86 million, equivalent to 8.9% of Vietnam's population. Of which, the number of newly opened accounts in September was 158,504 accounts, down 52% compared to the previous month.

The number of new securities accounts opened by investors decreased sharply in the context of the VN-Index facing difficulties around 1,300 points and the stock market liquidity was also poor in September. The total average trading value per session on the 3 floors reached 17,737 trillion VND in September. In terms of order matching alone, the average trading value per session was 15,109 billion VND, down 8.5% compared to the average in August and down 24.7% compared to the average in 5 months.
Similarly, liquidity on the HNX and UPCoM exchanges both decreased. The HNX Index tended to recover in the second half of the month but still decreased by 1.12% compared to August 2024, closing at 234.91 points. The average trading volume reached 57.5 million shares/session, down 5.7%. The average trading value reached VND 1,092 billion/session, down 11.04%. Foreign investors returned to net buying after 2 months of net selling of stocks on the HNX. Of which, the buying value was VND 1,128 billion and the selling value was more than VND 1,084 billion. In total, in September 2024, foreign investors net bought VND 44.2 billion.
On the UPCoM market, trading was also less active than last month. Liquidity and stock prices both decreased. The UPCoM Index closed September 2024 at 94.17 points (down 0.65%) with an average trading volume of more than 42.92 million shares/session (down 6.81%), and an average trading value of more than VND 643 billion/session (down 19.12%).
