Professor Nguyen Dinh Duc (University of Technology, Vietnam National University, Hanoi) has just been honored to receive the Bao Son Award - an award honoring outstanding research works that bring many practical values.

30 years of durability

Professor Nguyen Dinh Duc's award-winning work is the cluster of works "Research and application of advanced three-phase composite materials and structures in engineering." This is the result of Professor, Doctor of Science Nguyen Dinh Duc's persistent research and practical application over the past 30 years.

That journey began in the 90s of the 20th century, at the Composite Materials Laboratory of the Institute of Machine Building Research, Academy of Sciences of the Soviet Union - one of the most advanced and modern laboratories on composite materials in the world at that time.

With persistent efforts, Professor Nguyen Dinh Duc discovered a new carbon-carbon composite material structure with a three-phase spatial structure with super mechanical durability, super thermal durability and super light weight, which plays a very important role in the fields of industry and national security, especially in missile manufacturing technology.

The discovery of Professor Nguyen Dinh Duc is the answer that many physicists and material technologists have not been able to solve to improve the physical and mechanical properties of composite materials.

In addition, the study calculated the interaction between the matrix with fibers and particles. The formulas determining the elastic moduli are expressed in analytical form, so that by changing the initially selected parameters, we can design new composite materials with the desired mechanical properties.

Based on the results of basic and experimental research, Professor Nguyen Dinh Duc has proven that adding particles, especially nano-sized particles, will significantly reduce voids, improve the physical properties of composite materials such as increasing elasticity, increasing heat resistance, reducing plastic deformation and creep, and increasing the life of the material.

Since 2012, Professor Nguyen Dinh Duc has collaborated with the Institute of Shipbuilding Research - Nha Trang University, successfully applied the waterproofing of ship engine bays using 3-phase polymer composites when adding titanium oxide particles, which was granted a patent by the Department of Intellectual Property in 2016. Since then, thanks to the application of scientific research achievements, the Institute has improved product quality and competitiveness, continuously developed, and built more than 60 ships and many composite equipment in the field of ships and fishing logistics, with a total revenue of over 300 billion VND.

Professor Nguyen Dinh Duc has also researched and calculated the vibration, static and dynamic stability of plate and shell structures made from 3-phase composites and these structures can be applied in construction and infrastructure works, shipbuilding, solar panels, to the shells of composite structures used in aviation, space, and structures subject to complex conditions of heat, electricity, and magnetic fields.

Building a new school of research

According to the evaluation of the Bao Son Award Council in 2024, Professor Nguyen Dinh Duc's research on 3-phase composites with spatial structure has high knowledge content, scientific content as well as high applicability, affirming the research stature of Vietnamese scientists in the field of advanced materials, deserving to be honored.

The Council also recognized the special point in his persistent work as not only being excellent in scientific research and practical application but also creating a school of 3-phase composites in Vietnam with a name and reputation known and highly appreciated by the international scientific community.

In the field of research on 3-phase composite materials alone, Professor Nguyen Dinh Duc has successfully trained many PhDs. Currently, his students are continuing to research in many directions to apply advanced 3-phase composite materials in the more modern shipbuilding industry and other industrial fields in Vietnam.

During his scientific career, Professor Nguyen Dinh Duc has published nearly 400 articles and scientific works, including more than 220 articles in international journals in the ISI list. Regarding 3-phase composites alone, he has published over 30 articles and works, with more than 20 articles in prestigious international ISI journals.

For 6 consecutive years from 2019 to present, Professor Nguyen Dinh Duc has continuously been in the top 10,000 scientists with the most influential research and publication index in the world, ranked 78th in the field of Engineering and Technology in 2024. He is honored to be invited to join the scientific council of scientific journals in the ISI category of the international scientific community.

Honored to receive the Bao Son Award, Professor, Doctor of Science Nguyen Dinh Duc said that the award is a great source of encouragement and motivation for him and his colleagues to continue conquering new heights in science, bringing scientific research results to practically serve the lives of the people and the country.

Sharing about his plans for the future, Professor Nguyen Dinh Duc said he will continue to research new materials with superior properties such as pentagraphin, auxetic, composites reinforced by carbon nanotubes (CNT), graphene... to significantly enhance mechanical strength, thermal and electrical conductivity - towards applications in the fields of electronics, renewable energy, information storage and aerospace and especially the application of artificial intelligence in engineering problems.

“Scientific research is profound but very close to reality. When scientists delve into reality and immerse themselves in reality, they will be able to apply their research and bring practical value to the community,” said Professor Nguyen Dinh Duc./.
