In recent years, many farmers in key corn growing areas of Son La such as Mai Son, Yen Chau, Bac Yen... have actively promoted production, applied technical advances, especially switching from growing low-value corn varieties to growing high-yield hybrid sweet corn varieties such as Vinaseed's F1 VNS8 hybrid sweet corn variety.

Coming to Chieng Sung commune (Mai Son, Son La) these days, we witnessed the images of traders busily selecting big, beautiful corn cobs to put in bags to ship and the joy of a good harvest and good price of the people here during the corn harvest season.
While nimbly picking corn for traders and happily sharing with us, Ms. Quàng Thị Hồm (Cham Cang village, Chieng Sung commune) said: Chieng Sung is an area with many difficulties in water resources, so the economic development of the people here mainly comes from corn.
However, the biggest cost for corn growers in Son La today is pesticides, so choosing corn varieties with high yield, good quality, and resistance to pests to reduce pesticide costs and increase economic efficiency is the goal that we farmers are aiming for.

“In previous years, my family also grew many types of corn, including production corn, waxy corn, and sweet corn. And this season, the staff introduced the F1 hybrid sweet corn variety VNS8, which I planted on a trial area of nearly 3 sao. Now that the actual harvest has shown that this is a very potential corn variety, next season I will probably expand the area for planting this corn variety,” said Ms. Quang Thi Hom with a smile.
Through the field visit, delegates and farmers of Son La also highly appreciated the outstanding characteristics of the F1 VNS8 hybrid sweet corn variety. Mr. Hoang Van Viet, an officer of Trung Hieu Organic Cooperative (Chieng Sung commune) commented: The F1 VNS8 hybrid sweet corn variety has a very good seed setting rate; the corn cobs are uniform and large; the corn plants can withstand harsh weather and have a shorter growing period than other sweet corn varieties by 5-7 days.
Mr. Viet compared: Compared to other sweet corn varieties being grown by people in Chieng Sung farm, the F1 hybrid sweet corn variety VNS8 is currently being purchased by traders at the field at a price of 16,000 VND/kg, much higher than other sweet corn varieties. Although this is a rather high price, traders still compete to place orders.

Also one of the households that put the F1 VNS8 hybrid sweet corn into production this Autumn-Winter crop, Mr. Lo Van Bay (Cao Son village, Chieng Sung commune) shared: Although planted off-season, the weather was not favorable, but the F1 VNS8 hybrid sweet corn grew very well, right from the time the buds emerged, it showed better development than other corn varieties. In fact, the corn harvest of this corn variety is very beautiful, with long stalks, large ears, and large kernels. If the market price is 20,000 VND/kg, it would be wonderful.
Sharing his long-term corn growing experience, Mr. Bay said: In addition to proper fertilization techniques and adequate water supply, the most important thing is still standard seeds. Compared with other sweet corn varieties, the F1 hybrid sweet corn variety VNS8 has very good seed quality. This is shown right from the moment the corn plants first sprout, they are very beautiful and grow quickly.
Although the fertilization techniques and planting density are the same as other varieties, the F1 VNS8 hybrid sweet corn grows well. By harvest time, the area planted with F1 VNS8 hybrid sweet corn still has green leaves and no pests or diseases.
Even though it is in harvest stage, F1 hybrid sweet corn VNS8 leaves are still green and disease-free.
“With advantages like these, I am sure that in the future, the F1 hybrid sweet corn variety VNS8 will be much better than other corn varieties. Because in reality, I see that the corn is big, long, green, and the leaves are very beautiful,” Mr. Bay affirmed.
Mr. Tran Quoc Toan, Deputy Director of Vinaseed Ba Vi Branch, said that this is the third crop that Vinaseed has introduced the F1 VNS8 hybrid sweet corn variety into production on the Chieng Sung farm. Introducing high-quality hybrid corn into production will help farmers have another superior and reliable choice.
Talking about the superiority of the variety, Mr. Toan said: The F1 hybrid sweet corn variety VNS8 has uniform purity, large and strong stems and the height of the corn cob is about 45cm, which is 1/3 of the plant height, so the ability to resist lodging is very good, this is one of the very superior and different characteristics of the variety.
Son La farmers evaluate the quality of F1 hybrid sweet corn variety VNS8 in Chieng Sung commune (Mai Son, Son La)
As for the growing time of F1 VNS8 hybrid sweet corn, it is about 73-74 days. While the control corn varieties planted with the tea are still young, F1 VNS8 hybrid sweet corn has entered the harvest stage and is growing color. Therefore, putting F1 VNS8 hybrid sweet corn into production in early tea will be the ideal time because at this stage there is not much corn on the market, from which the best price will be obtained.
Another important characteristic of the F1 hybrid sweet corn variety VNS8 is that the rate of grade 1 corn accounts for 100%, the number of kernel rows reaches 16 rows/corn. In particular, the kernel of the corn is very hard, this is one of the factors that determines the ability to limit water loss when harvesting fresh corn, and transportation does not affect the quality of the corn.
“Another advantage of the F1 VNS8 hybrid sweet corn variety is its narrow flag angle, which will demonstrate concentrated pollination of the corn plant, thereby producing corn cobs with the best quality. In addition, the narrow leaf angle allows farmers to increase planting density without affecting the growth of the plant,” Mr. Toan added.
