Help the elderly improve their eyesight

In Dong Nai, every year, more than 2,000 elderly people receive free eye surgery and more than 3,000 other cases receive medical examination and consultation for eye diseases.

According to the President of the Provincial Elderly Association, Nguyen Thi Kim Lien, one of the common diseases among the elderly is vision loss due to eye diseases. Therefore, in the process of implementing elderly care activities, the Elderly Association at all levels in the province has coordinated with associations, organizations, individuals, and philanthropists to support the elderly with funds for eye examination and surgery at hospitals in and outside the province.

According to the President of the Provincial Red Cross Society (CRS) Do Thi Phuoc Thien, in the process of implementing primary health care for the people, the CRS at all levels in the province have mobilized resources, coordinated to organize eye disease examination and classification, and eye surgery for the elderly through the program Bringing Light to the Poor Blind. The average amount of money mobilized each year by the CRS at all levels to carry out this task is about 9.5 billion VND.

Mr. Nguyen Van Thang (residing in Xuan An ward, Long Khanh city) said that through the support of the city's Red Cross Association and benefactors, he was supported to have free cataract surgery. During the journey to Ho Chi Minh City, he was supported by the Organizing Committee with transportation, food and gifts after the surgery. After many months of surgery, his eyesight has improved compared to before.

In order not to miss out on those in need, in 2025, the Red Cross Associations at all levels in the province will continue to maintain the implementation of the Program Bringing Light to the Poor Blind. In particular, the associations at all levels will review the elderly who are poor households, near-poor families, and people in difficult circumstances who need to improve their vision. At the same time, the Red Cross Associations at all levels in the province will step up the mobilization of resources inside and outside the province to bring light to people in general and the elderly in particular.
