Help farmers get rich and reduce poverty sustainably

Along with building a strong association, Gia Phu Commune Farmers' Association has promoted propaganda and mobilized cadres and farmer members to promote the spirit of solidarity, dynamism and creativity in production and business, contributing to promoting economic development, hunger eradication, poverty reduction, and striving to become rich legitimately.

Gia Phu Commune Farmers' Association has 28 branches with 3,216 members. In recent times, the Commune Farmers' Association has organized propaganda on the Central and local directives and guiding documents on poverty reduction work at the branches to arouse the will of self-reliance, self-improvement, and the spirit of rising up to escape poverty of farmer members. At the same time, it encourages good farming and business households to promote the spirit of mutual love and support for poor households, integrating it into the implementation of movements of good production and business, building new rural areas, responding to the Month for the Poor, Day for the Poor, etc.

Mr. Cam Van An, Chairman of the Farmers' Association of Gia Phu Commune, shared: Implementing the National Target Program on Sustainable Poverty Reduction, every year, the Association has coordinated with the People's Committee and sectors and organizations to investigate and survey poor and near-poor households in the area, find the causes of poverty; directly meet members and farmers to grasp the aspirations and legitimate needs of each household and have specific solutions to help... Through implementation and promotion of propaganda work, it has created a deep awareness among cadres, members and farmers about poverty reduction work.

To help farmers gain knowledge on economic development and sustainable poverty reduction, the Commune Farmers' Association has coordinated with specialized agencies to guide members and farmers to actively shift the economic structure towards commodity production, promote the application of science and technology in production; build demonstration models, organize field workshops, and visit and learn from the experiences of good production and business households.

Over the past 3 years, Gia Phu Commune Farmers' Association has coordinated with the Agricultural Technical Center (now the General Service Center) to organize 55 training courses for farmer members on technical processes, crop schedules, crop variety structure, fruit tree growing techniques; opened 25 training courses on transferring science and technology to farmers on planting, raising animals, using pesticides, and utilizing agricultural waste as fertilizer for over 2,000 farmer members. Coordinated with agricultural material stores and agents to supply 11.2 tons of various types of rice seeds and 31.5 tons of organic fertilizer, supporting farmers in the form of deferred payment.

Paying attention to creating conditions for poor farmer members to borrow capital for production and business is one of the solutions actively implemented by the Commune Farmers' Association. Up to now, the Association has stood as a credit guarantee with the Social Policy Bank to help 570 member households and farmers borrow capital with a total outstanding debt of 28.4 billion VND. In addition, it has coordinated with the Provincial Farmers' Association to disburse 1.4 billion VND from the "Farmer Support" fund to 38 households to borrow to carry out cow breeding projects in the occupational groups of the villages: Nhot 1, Tao, Suoi Cay, Dong, La, Chat Moi... The Commune Farmers' Association also encourages members and farmers to expand the production scale of some local advantageous crops to form commodity production areas such as: Organic rice, citrus fruit trees, garlic...; develop some local OCOP products such as: Black garlic, dried garlic, leaf yeast wine, burnt rice...

In the past 2 years, the 1.5-hectare garden - pond - barn model of Mr. Lo Van Viet's family in Bua Chung 2 village has brought a stable income of nearly 200 million VND/year, attracting many farmers in Gia Phu commune to visit and learn. Mr. Viet shared: With the support of local authorities and guidance and knowledge support from the commune's Farmers' Association officials, my family chose to develop the economy according to the garden - pond - barn model. The family dug a pond to raise fish; improved the upland land to plant nearly 500 Thai jackfruit trees, Duong Canh oranges, Vinh oranges, seedless guavas; invested in building barns to raise 30 pigs combined with free-range chickens. Through training, the family also learned to utilize waste from crops and fertilizer from livestock to fertilize crops, reducing part of production costs.

Thanks to the timely implementation of support policies and awareness raising, members and farmers of Gia Phu commune proactively overcome difficulties, actively develop the economy, and help each other in life. The number of members and farmers registering and achieving the title of good production and business at all levels has been constantly increasing. Up to now, the whole commune has 412 member and farmer households recognized as good production and business households at all levels.

Strengthening propaganda and mobilizing members and farmers to compete in economic development, along with the spirit of overcoming difficulties and the will to rise up of members and farmers, has contributed to the successful implementation of the commune's goal of sustainable poverty reduction. Up to now, there are 9.3% of poor households, 7.7% of near-poor households, with an average income of 39 million VND/person/year, contributing to improving people's material life and mobilizing resources to build new rural areas in the locality.
