Google admits bug caused Google Maps user data to 'evaporate'
According to Google spokesperson Genevieve Park, this was a technical issue that caused some users' timeline data to be deleted. Google also confirmed that only users who have enabled cloud backup will be able to restore their data. Those who do not have this feature enabled will permanently lose their data.
Specifically, Google said that users with encrypted timeline backups enabled will have the opportunity to restore their data by updating the Google Maps app to the latest version, then accessing the timeline and selecting the cloud icon to restore. Users can check the backup status by accessing the timeline in the Google Maps app (iOS or Android) and looking for the cloud icon with an arrow (enabled) or a line through it (disabled).
This incident has raised concerns among users about the reliability of the Google Maps service. Previously, Google announced that it would be switching to storing location data on the device to enhance privacy. However, this incident shows that storing data on the device also poses a risk of data loss if there is no cloud backup.
Google also recommends that users enable cloud backup to ensure their timeline data is protected. However, many users expressed frustration that Google does not provide a clear way to restore data from the exported file if cloud backup is not used.
