Google admits to a bug that caused Google Maps user data to 'disappear'.
According to Google spokesperson Genevieve Park, this was a technical issue that resulted in the deletion of some users' timeline data. Google also confirmed that only users who had enabled cloud backup were able to recover their data. Those who did not enable this feature will permanently lose their data.
Specifically, Google states that users who have enabled encrypted timeline backups will have the opportunity to restore their data by updating the Google Maps app to the latest version, then accessing the timeline and selecting the cloud icon to restore. Users can check the backup status by accessing the timeline in the Google Maps app (iOS or Android) and seeing if the cloud icon has an arrow (enabled) or a dash (disabled).
This incident has raised concerns among users about the reliability of Google Maps. Previously, Google announced a shift to storing location data on the device to enhance privacy. However, this incident demonstrates that storing data on the device also carries the risk of data loss if there is no cloud backup.
Google also recommends that users enable cloud backup to ensure timeline data is protected. However, many users have expressed frustration that Google doesn't provide a clear way to recover data from exported files without using cloud backup.
