"Adding fuel to the fire" in the journey to eliminate temporary housing.

- In modern society, every person has the right to live in a sturdy, safe, and comfortable home. However, many families still live in dilapidated and substandard houses. Working together to eliminate temporary and dilapidated housing not only improves living conditions but also contributes to building a more equitable and civilized society.

Ms. Tran Thi Thu Hien, Chairwoman of the Fatherland Front Committee of Son Duong Town (Son Duong District), presents financial assistance for house construction to poor households in the town.

Temporary or dilapidated houses are those built with unsustainable materials, such as corrugated iron roofs, bamboo or thatched walls, or any other materials that can be used temporarily. Temporary houses often do not guarantee the safety of residents, especially in harsh weather conditions such as storms and floods. In fact, many families are facing the risk of losing property, health, and even lives simply because they live in these makeshift, unstable houses.

With the spirit of "leaving no one behind," profound humanitarian significance, and high political determination, the Vietnam Fatherland Front Committee of Son Duong town has developed a plan and promoted information and propaganda work through many rich and diverse forms. Accordingly, people from all walks of life, businesses, philanthropists, officials, Party members, Youth Union members, association members, and workers have participated in supporting the cause.

The campaign was conducted with the highest level of spirit, responsibility, and effectiveness. In 2025, the Fatherland Front Committee of Son Duong town mobilized 223 million VND from donated funds to support the elimination of temporary and dilapidated houses for people in the area.

These families are often impoverished and lack the financial means to build a sturdy home. This leads to a lack of basic infrastructure, affecting the quality of life and the development of children. Furthermore, living in temporary housing exposes residents to health problems due to unsanitary conditions, pollution, and fire hazards.

In recent days, Ms. Tran Thi Thu Hien, Chairwoman of the Vietnam Fatherland Front Committee of Son Duong town, visited and provided financial assistance to the family of Ms. Ly Thi Lan, daughter of Martyr Ly Van Hung, residing in Thuong Chau residential area, to build a new house. For many years, Ms. Lan's family had lived in a severely dilapidated wooden house, but due to difficult economic conditions, they lacked the means and funds to rebuild. Faced with this situation, Ms. Tran Thi Thu Hien appealed to the community and benefactors for support, raising 5 million VND, and members of the Veterans Association of Vi Xuyen - Ha Giang contributed 70 million VND. Along with money from family members and relatives, and the labor of neighbors, after two months of construction, the house was completed according to the family's wishes.

Ms. Tran Thi Thu Hien, along with her colleagues in the Steering Committee for the elimination of temporary and dilapidated houses, inspected the progress of house construction in Son Duong town.

Visiting the family of Ms. Pham Thi Huyen Trang, a near-poor household in Doan Ket residential area, Son Duong town, who recently had her temporary house replaced, she happily said: “Thanks to the joint support of the Party Committee and the government of Son Duong town, and especially the encouragement of the Party branch, the residential group, and particularly Ms. Tran Thi Thu Hien, and the efforts and hard work of my family, the house we have dreamed of for so many years has finally been completed. From now on, my family feels more secure and no longer has to live in a dilapidated house every time it rains or storms.”

Comrade Tran Thi Thu Hien said: “Building houses for the poor and near-poor, especially elderly and single-parent households, is not simple at all. With a support fund of 50 million VND per household, the rest is mainly supported by family, relatives, and neighbors in the residential area. Some households are hesitant to accept the support because they cannot afford to build a house. But in difficulty, ingenuity emerges. In any residential area where there are people living in temporary or dilapidated houses, I work directly with the Party branch and the residential area to discuss and skillfully “persuade” the households to accept the support.”

"After that, we will mobilize the strength of solidarity, first within the residential area, then in the neighborhood groups throughout the town. Those who have more will contribute more, those who have less will contribute less, those who have resources will contribute resources, and those who have labor will contribute labor to build homes for the people. By 2025, Son Duong town is determined to complete the commencement, construction, and commissioning of new houses for 6 poor, near-poor, and disadvantaged households in the area."

Ms. Dinh Thi Kim Luyen, Secretary of the Party Committee of Son Duong town, commented: “Comrade Tran Thi Thu Hien is an exemplary official, with a sense of responsibility towards her work, dedicated to the people, and has effective methods that have made a significant contribution to mobilizing resources to eliminate temporary housing in Son Duong town. The achievements of the Party Committee and the government of Son Duong town show that when the will of the Party and the aspirations of the people are intertwined, nothing is impossible.”

Replacing temporary housing with sturdy homes will help protect people's lives and minimize damage during natural disasters. A sturdy house not only creates a comfortable living space but also helps people maintain a stable life. This is especially important for children's development, as a good living environment will provide them with better opportunities for learning and growth. Replacing temporary housing with sturdy homes will help families achieve long-term stability and promote socio-economic development in the locality.

Eliminating temporary housing is a crucial goal in building a just and civilized society. Implementing programs to support people, strengthening community participation, and applying innovative solutions will help build a sustainable future for all. Every small action, whether a material or spiritual contribution, can make a big difference in the lives of those in difficult circumstances. By working together to eliminate temporary housing, we not only provide homes and safety for the poor but also contribute to the overall development of the country.
