Gyokeres only wants to wear Arsenal's shirt if he leaves Sporting Lisbon. |
The 27-year-old striker became one of the most sought-after strikers in Europe thanks to his brilliant season with Sporting. He scored 54 goals in 52 matches, contributing greatly to the team's domestic championship and Portuguese Cup.
Many of Europe's top clubs have expressed an interest in signing him, but Arsenal currently have the upper hand. Juventus and Atletico Madrid are also interested, while Manchester United are said to have made a huge offer to make Gyokeres the spearhead of their attack.
However, Gyokeres preferred to play in the Champions League next season, rejecting Old Trafford in favour of the Emirates. A bitter row between his agent Hasan Cetinkaya and Sporting president Frederico Varandas complicated the deal, with Varandas rejecting a £60m deal to allow Gyokeres to leave.
However, Gyokeres believes that everything will be resolved soon. The striker even informed his relatives that they will see him wearing an Arsenal shirt next season.
The Gunners made an initial offer of around £50m. Sporting rejected it outright, but they plan to make a new, higher offer in the coming days.
Gyokeres' current contract at Sporting CP runs until June 2028. If an agreement with the Portuguese club cannot be reached, Arsenal still have a plan B in the form of RB Leipzig's Benjamin Sesko. However, they will have to compete with Saudi Pro League side Al-Hilal and meet Leipzig's transfer demand of over £70m.
