Hanoi plans to pilot two bicycle routes

VnExpressVnExpress02/12/2023

The Hanoi Department of Transport has just proposed to organize two bicycle routes along the To Lich River and around Hoa Binh Park - Hoang Minh Thao Street.

The route along To Lich River, from Nga Tu So, Dong Da District, to Cau Giay District, is 2.3 km long and 4 m wide. It is expected to be renovated into a 3 m wide two-way bicycle lane, with the remaining meter reserved for pedestrians.

This route is likely to connect with Lang Station of the Cat Linh - Ha Dong elevated railway and Station No. 8 of the Nhon - Hanoi Railway Station metro. In addition, the route will connect with bus routes on Lang Road through 6 bus stops. Relevant units will add 6 public bicycle stations along the route.

The second pilot route is the sidewalk around Hoa Binh Park and Hoang Minh Thao Street, Bac Tu Liem District. The total bicycle route is about 5.7 km, of which the sidewalk area around Hoa Binh Park is 1.8 km, and the area on Hoang Minh Thao Street is nearly 4 km.

According to the plan, to build a bicycle lane at Hoa Binh Park, the city needs to repair the sidewalks, creating a priority lane for two-way traffic with a width of 3 m. Hoang Minh Thao Street will organize traffic exclusively for bicycles on the basis of the existing mixed lanes. The bicycle lanes are 2 m wide on each side, the remaining 4.5 m is for motorbikes and non-motorized vehicles.

The estimated cost for the pilot of the two routes is nearly 10 billion VND from the state budget. Of which, the route along To Lich River is 970 million VND, the route around Hoa Binh Park and Hoang Minh Thao Street is 8.8 billion VND.

Hanoi does not have dedicated or priority routes for bicycles. This means of transport is shared with cars and motorbikes. The Hanoi Department of Transport believes that the lack of infrastructure for bicycles partly limits people from using them and makes it difficult for public bicycle services to develop.
