"First, the chairman of Hai Phong Football Club, Van Tran Hoan, would like to take responsibility and accept the blame," Hai Phong Club Chairman Van Tran Hoan said about the fans setting off flares in the stands of Hang Day Stadium on the evening of April 13. Flares appeared in the away team's audience area, even though before the match, Hai Phong Club sent a dispatch to the home team, Hanoi FC, pledging not to let that happen.

According to Mr. Van Tran Hoan, the incident did not only take responsibility for Hai Phong FC. The chairman of Hai Phong FC said that the fanatic fans were provoked by information related to the team's official letter requesting the home team Hanoi FC to sponsor tickets.

"Part of the fault also lies with the match organizers and Hanoi FC for letting the document leak out. This caused some individuals to incite and set off flares. Those individuals have ruined the image of football, one bad apple spoils the barrel. Last year, when we came here, it was even more fiery, the number of fans was many times higher, the team was competing for the championship but there were no flares. If the document had not leaked out, I think there would definitely be no flares," said Mr. Van Tran Hoan.

“Our document shows goodwill between the two teams. That is very normal in the V-League. Teams coming to Hai Phong are always welcomed by us, with free tickets. But that document accidentally leaked out, and articles appeared saying that Hai Phong was begging. That touched the pride of some extremist individuals and some individuals I could not manage, leading to the incident of setting off fireworks.”

Mr. Van Tran Hoan added: “The press and social networks writing that we are begging will hurt the pride of extremists. In fact, this is an official dispatch requesting ticket support, which is very normal. Because there were too many mixed reactions, at 11am on April 13, I called Mr. Nguyen Quoc Hoi and returned all the tickets to Hanoi FC. After this incident, I also hope that the organizing committee and Hanoi FC will do better security. Personally, I stood in the B stand and tried to talk to Hai Phong fans so that they would not set off fireworks."

The match between Hanoi FC and Hai Phong was exciting with the home team winning 3-0. There were about 4-5 flares set off in the stands but did not interrupt the match. Before the match took place, the away team's fans also set off many flares outside the stadium.
