Within the framework of the Thang Long-Hanoi Festival (from November 1-16), the Hanoi Department of Culture and Sports coordinated with Long Bien ward (Hanoi city) and the Vietnam Cultural Heritage Association to organize an event to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the Tug of War ritual and game being listed on the Representative List of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

Exactly 10 years ago, Tug of War rituals and games in Vietnam, Cambodia, South Korea and the Philippines were officially inscribed on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

In Vietnam, localities with heritage participating in the 2015 registration dossier include the provinces of Lao Cai, Vinh Phuc (now Phu Tho), Bac Ninh and Hanoi.

Tug of War rituals and games are cultural practices found in many parts of the world.

In Asia, especially in regions with long histories of agricultural civilization such as Northeast and Southeast Asia, tug of war often takes place in spring, the beginning of a new farming cycle.

Tug of war is both an exciting game during the festival and a sacred ritual associated with the wish for favorable weather and bountiful crops.

Along with the similarities, depending on the climate and environment, the forms of practicing Tug of War rituals and games in each place have their own distinct characteristics, showing their own uniqueness and creativity.

In Vietnam, rituals and games and Tug of War are mainly concentrated in Vietnamese communities in the Red River Delta, North Central Coast, and ethnic minorities in the northern mountainous areas such as the Tay, Thai, Giay...

Nowadays, the number of communities practicing Tug of War heritage is increasing, actively participating in exchange and performance activities at home and abroad.

From 6 communities participating in the UNESCO registration dossier in 2015, up to now, in Vietnam, there have been 4 more communities participating in the Tug of War heritage community network.

Exchanges, performances and learning between communities also open up many opportunities and conditions for heritage to spread widely. Communities can exchange culture, perform and promote heritage, thereby contributing to its preservation and sustainable development.

To celebrate the 10th anniversary of UNESCO recognition, the Hanoi Department of Culture and Sports organized an international workshop “A decade of protecting and promoting Tug of War rituals and games” and exchange and practical demonstration activities with the participation of international delegations and 10 heritage practicing communities from provinces and cities in the country.

Among them, the ritual performance and Tug of War game held on November 16th is the most anticipated part.

The exchange, performance of rituals and Tug of War games with the participation of Gijisi Tug of War Association (Dangjin city, Korea) and 8 tug of war communities in Vietnam including: Sitting tug of war at Tran Vu temple (Long Bien ward, Hanoi city), Xuan Lai mine tug of war (Da Phuc commune, Hanoi city), Ngai Khe mine tug of war (Chieu My commune, Hanoi city), Huong Canh river tug of war (Binh Nguyen commune, Phu Tho province), Huu Chap tug of war (Kinh Bac ward, Bac Ninh province), Tay people's tug of war, Trung Do village (Bao Nhai commune, Lao Cai province), Hoa Loan tug of war (Vinh Thanh commune, Phu Tho province), Phu Hao village tug of war (Vi Khe ward, Ninh Binh province).
