Implementing the OCOP Program in Hanoi: Dan Phuong Commune creates new momentum for the rural economy

The high-tech orchid growing model of Dan Hoai - Flora Vietnam Cooperative in Dan Phuong commune is a testament to the right direction of people's efforts to get rich on agricultural land. At the same time, this is one of the high-tech orchid growing models considered a model of modern urban agriculture.

Director of Dan Hoai Cooperative Bui Huong Bich said that in early 2004, realizing the advantages of the commune located along the Red River, with fertile land, abundant water resources, convenient transportation system and demand for high-quality flowers, the Cooperative decided to invest in high-quality flower production. At the same time, Dan Hoai Cooperative was selected by the Ministry of Science and Technology as the unit implementing the project "Building a model of high-quality flower production on an industrial scale in Dan Phuong, Hanoi". After implementing the project, the Cooperative's facilities and scientific and technological capacity for high-quality flower production, especially Phalaenopsis orchids, were significantly improved.

Thanks to the above systematic investment, the Cooperative now has advanced facilities with 20,000m2 of high-tech greenhouses, producing an average of about 800,000 phalaenopsis plants of various types. Thereby, it not only makes an important contribution to the local economic development, but also creates jobs for over 40 workers with an income of 6-8 million VND/month.

Since the end of 2017, all orchids supplied by the Cooperative to the market have been traceable in origin, which is not something that every Cooperative can do. The Cooperative also has a modern tissue culture room to control the source of seedlings, a cooling system, post-harvest flower preservation, a room to design orchid shapes according to orders... At the same time, the Cooperative has mastered the technology to produce high-end flowers such as phalaenopsis orchids, dancing girls, lilies... suitable for Vietnam's climate.

To build a brand for Phalaenopsis orchid products, Dan Hoai Cooperative has participated in the One Commune One Product Program of Hanoi City. Currently, the Cooperative has successfully built a Phalaenopsis orchid brand called "Flora Vietnam" achieving OCOP from 3 to 4 stars.

Or like the Golden Shrimp Pomelo, which is a Dien pomelo variety that was brought to Thuong Mo commune (now Dan Phuong commune) in the early 2000s. Due to its suitability to the climate and soil, and the care of farmers, the pomelo produces sweet fruit with large segments, bright yellow flesh, and an attractive aroma.

Coming to the grapefruit garden of more than 1,000 square meters of Mrs. Nguyen Thi Quyen's family - a member of the Thuong Mo Golden Shrimp Grapefruit Production and Consumption Cooperative, you can see with your own eyes the grapefruit trees laden with fruit, fragrant, bright yellow in the sun. Mrs. Nguyen Thi Quyen shared that her family was one of the first households to grow grapefruit in the commune. In the first many years, due to lack of experience, the grapefruit was not delicious and the economic efficiency was low. Many families cut it down, but her family still kept it and researched and learned how to grow and care for it. "It took us nearly ten years to have the process and techniques to care for the grapefruit trees so that they can be economically efficient. Currently, my family has three gardens, each garden is three sao wide, with a revenue of about 500 million VND/year. My family's economy has improved thanks to this golden shrimp grapefruit tree" - Mrs. Quyen said.

Talking about the quality of yellow shrimp pomelos, Ms. Nguyen Thi Quyen shared more: Yellow shrimp pomelos have thin skin, sweet taste, large grapefruit segments, fresh yellow grapefruit segments, fragrant. Long-term trees will have better fruit than newly planted trees. Up to now, the quality of Thuong Mo yellow shrimp pomelos has been confirmed. Yellow shrimp pomelos are harvested near Tet and Tet so the price is high and stable, ranging from 30 - 50 thousand/fruit. Normally, consumers and traders come to the garden to buy, the gardens do not have to worry about output.

To improve the quality as well as the brand, creating more advantages for the production and trading of yellow shrimp pomelos, on the occasion of evaluating and classifying the OCOP yellow shrimp pomelo products of the Thuong Mo Yellow Shrimp Pomelo Production and Consumption Cooperative, which have met the 4-star OCOP criteria. The 4-star OCOP certification will contribute to increasing the value and expanding the consumption opportunities of Thuong Mo yellow shrimp pomelos; creating motivation for the cooperative members in particular, and farmers in Dan Phuong commune, to focus on sustainable production.

47 OCOP products certified

Currently, Dan Phuong commune has 47 OCOP products with 11 recognized entities including 34 3-star OCOP products and 13 4-star OCOP products, affirming quality and opening up opportunities to reach further. The products are distributed in many fields such as food, beverages, herbs, handicrafts... creating many choices for consumers.

It can be said that Dan Phuong commune has been affirming the right direction in developing the local economy, especially through the "One Commune One Product" (OCOP) program. The program not only contributes to preserving and promoting local cultural identity but is also an important driving force to promote sustainable rural economic development, improve income and life for people.

With 47 certified OCOP products, it not only shows the efforts in developing the agricultural economy of the commune, but also affirms the right direction in improving quality, increasing value and building the brand of Dan Phuong products in the market. This is an important foundation for the locality to continue to promote advantages, promote product consumption, contribute to increasing people's income, towards sustainable rural development.
