On May 8, Bach Mai Hospital signed a Memorandum of Understanding with its partners to improve healthcare services and medical technology in Vietnam.

Associate Professor, Dr. Dao Xuan Co, Director of Bach Mai Hospital, said that cardiac arrest and neurological damage such as stroke and traumatic brain injury are urgent and serious medical conditions that require immediate attention and intervention to prevent serious consequences or death.

These conditions often result in long-term disabilities, requiring extensive medical care, rehabilitation and support services, thus contributing significantly to the burden on the health sector.

Therefore, the signing of the memorandum of understanding aims to improve the quality of treatment for patients in intensive care due to cardiac arrest and neurological damage.

Accordingly, the goal of this signing has 3 outstanding contents:

Improved clinicaleducation : Initiatives will raise awareness and provide knowledge to physicians and nurses about command hypothermia techniques in the care of patients in the intensive care unit with cardiac arrest and neurological injury.

Standardization of treatment: A national hypothermia protocol will be developed to ensure adherence to therapy and standardize care.

Clinical Data Collation: To expand insurance reimbursement coverage and provide more patients with access to command hypothermia when hospitalized for cardiac arrest or neurological injury.

In addition to providing innovative solutions and technologies, the partner also supports clinical research and training programs to promote optimal use of command hypothermia for critical care patients.

The technique of command hypothermia has been performed at Bach Mai Hospital since 2015, saving the lives of many critical cases due to cardiac arrest and brain damage.

Typically, the treatment will lower the patient's body temperature to 33 degrees Celsius (normally 36.5 - 37 degrees Celsius). The blood will then remain at this temperature for 24 hours to help the brain cells recover.

The machine then warms the patient according to a very strict program, gradually raising the patient's temperature by 0.25 degrees per hour until it reaches normal temperature.

When the patient's temperature drops, the brain will be less swollen, less inflamed, and have better cerebral perfusion, oxygen supply, and improved brain cell toxicity, from which brain cells will recover spectacularly.

Thanks to this technique, cardiac arrest patients will have a better chance of survival and better ability to recover consciousness and movement.
