Police block off Eiffel Tower after bomb threat on August 12
While patrolling the Eiffel Tower early on the morning of August 14 before the opening time of 9am, security officers discovered and woke up two men from the US.
The Paris prosecutor's office said the two American tourists were trapped inside the tower because they were too drunk and sleeping to wake themselves up.
The Eiffel Tower's management company, Sete, said the two intruders were found in an area closed to visitors, between the second and third floors of the tower.
According to a police source, after purchasing tickets at around 10:40 p.m. on August 13, the American duo went up the tower before jumping over the security fence while climbing down the stairs from the top of the tower.
Firefighters arrived at the scene to free the two trapped men and take them to a Paris police station. Sete said he would file a lawsuit against them for trespassing and forced management to delay the opening time from 9am to 10am.
Previously, on August 12, police had to evacuate tourists visiting the Eiffel Tower twice in the same day after someone threatened to bomb the tower.
The Eiffel Tower was built in 1887 and has become France's number one tourist attraction. Last year, around 6.2 million people visited it.
