Mother and baby whales hunting for prey in Cu Lao Mai Nha (O Loan commune, Dak Lak ) - Photo cut from clip filmed by Ms. Tran Thi My Ha
The image of a mother and baby whale hunting in the waters of Cu Lao Mai Nha has attracted much attention.
Ms. Tran Thi My Ha, a local tour guide, was the one who filmed the amazing moment at around 3:00 p.m. on July 12, while she was guiding guests to go snorkeling at Cu Lao Mai Nha.
Ms. Ha estimated that the mother whale was about 10m long, and the calf was about 6-7m. Both of them jumped out of the water to hunt for prey, creating a lively performance in the coastal waters.
“At that time, I saw flocks of birds flying over the sea, so I guessed that whales were preparing to hunt. So I asked the boat driver to get closer to have a chance to see this rare moment,” said Ms. Ha.
According to Ms. Ha, whales have appeared hunting many times in the Cu Lao Mai Nha area.
On July 1, many people recorded images of a large whale surfacing to hunt for prey in the waters of Mui Dien, Hoa Xuan commune, Dak Lak province.
Mr. Dao Quang Minh - Head of the Department of Fisheries and Seas of Dak Lak - said that whales often migrate to hunt for prey following fish flows, so usually at this time, whales often appear in the seas of Gia Lai , Dak Lak, Khanh Hoa provinces... This is also proof that the marine environment here is very good, with abundant food sources.
“Recently, dolphins and whales have been continuously appearing in the waters of Dak Lak. This is a good sign. However, if people encounter whales, they should not approach them, but keep their distance to avoid impacting or affecting the whales’ hunting and foraging activities, and at the same time, maintain a safe distance for people because whales flapping strongly create large waves,” said Mr. Minh.
