How are dozens of workers hospitalized after a meal doing?

The workers' health has stabilized.

On the morning of December 7th, in an interview with a reporter from Giao Thong Newspaper, Mr. Pham Ngoc Quy, Head of the Nghe An Food Safety and Hygiene Sub-Department, stated: Regarding the incident where dozens of workers were hospitalized after lunch on December 6th, the health of the patients has now stabilized, and none have experienced a worsening of their condition.

The workers were hospitalized for monitoring and treatment after exhibiting symptoms of poisoning.

Earlier, at around 11:30 AM on December 6th, BAC Trading Joint Stock Company provided 1,215 lunch meals to three companies, including Premium Fashion Vietnam Co., Ltd., JTEC Nghe An Co., Ltd., and NAKANO Garment Company (located in WHA Industrial Park and VSIP Industrial Park).

Around 1 PM on the same day, many workers began exhibiting symptoms of food poisoning such as headache, dizziness, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, fever, and rashes.

A total of 84 workers were taken to hospitals for emergency care and treatment.

Immediately after receiving the information, the Nghe An Department of Health quickly directed local authorities; the Provincial Food Safety and Hygiene Sub-department; Friendship Multi-specialty Hospital, Nghi Loc Hospital, 115 Hospital, Cua Dong Hospital; health centers in Nghi Loc and Hung Nguyen districts; and public and private medical facilities in the province.

Accordingly, hospitals are responsible for receiving, providing emergency care, treating, and monitoring patients' conditions, coordinating effectively, providing professional and human resource support, and promptly transferring patients with food poisoning to higher-level facilities.

Review and ensure the maximum allocation of personnel, medicines, medical supplies, medical equipment, and hospital beds to receive, manage, and treat patients.

Nghe An Friendship General Hospital has directed its outpatient emergency team to be ready to support Nghi Loc General Hospital, 115, Cua Dong, and other lower-level units when necessary, as directed by the Department of Health.

Instruct the Intensive Care and Toxicology Department and related departments to prepare plans and be ready to allocate personnel, medications, supplies, and medical equipment to receive critically ill patients transferred from lower-level facilities.

The Food Safety and Hygiene Sub-Department organized an investigation, coordinating with the People's Committee, the Health Department of Nghi Loc district, and other relevant units to direct the implementation of investigation, handling, and timely remediation activities to address the consequences….

By 8 PM that same day, 43 cases had stabilized and been discharged, while 41 patients were still under observation. NAKANO Garment Company, despite having 112 people eating the food, reported no cases of food poisoning.

The canteen providing meals for the workers has been suspended.

In parallel with receiving, treating, and providing emergency care to the workers, the health sector of Nghe An province also quickly inspected the canteen of BAC Trading Joint Stock Company - the unit that provided lunch meals for more than 1,200 workers at the three companies mentioned above.

Initial findings indicate that BAC Trading Joint Stock Company has failed to present certificates confirming training in food safety and hygiene; and health certificates for 5 out of 11 employees directly involved in food processing.

There are no contracts yet for providing meals to the units, nor contracts for supplying food and food ingredients.

The three-step food inspection logbook and food sample logbook were presented, but the entries were not in accordance with regulations.

Regarding the actual conditions at the facility, at the time of the investigation, several shortcomings were noted, such as inadequate hygiene in certain areas; illogical layout of areas; and the presence of insects and pests in the food preparation and processing areas. The three-step food inspection process and food sample retention were not implemented according to regulations.

Immediately afterward, authorities temporarily suspended the catering company due to numerous irregularities. The investigation team also took food samples for testing to determine the cause of the incident.
