Speaking at the ceremony, Mr. Le Quoc Phong - Secretary of Dong Thap Provincial Party Committee - recalled the anniversary of April 30, 50 years ago, when the people of Dong Thap and the people of the whole country were filled with joy when the historic Ho Chi Minh campaign achieved final victory, liberating Saigon - Gia Dinh, liberating the South, ending the resistance war against the US, saving the country that lasted more than 20 years.

The April 30 victory was a historical milestone of epochal significance, permanently ending the yoke of imperialism, ending the war, restoring peace , and unifying the country. Opening a new era for the Vietnamese people - the era of independence, unification, and the whole country moving towards socialism.

During the 21 years of resistance war against the US to save the country, the army and people of Dong Thap fought steadfastly through more than 16,000 large and small battles, feat after feat contributing with the whole country to make the historic day of April 30, 1975.

"In the first months after liberation, Dong Thap faced many difficulties and challenges. Natural conditions with many unfavorable factors, the economy mainly relied on agriculture, fragmented production, and infrastructure in all areas was among the weakest in the country.

After 50 years, we have achieved great and comprehensive achievements in many aspects. Especially in agriculture, processing industry, and digital transformation, there have been many remarkable steps forward. Rice output has reached 3.34 million tons/year (12.3 times higher than 50 years ago); the value chains of the province's key industries have developed strongly. The province's agricultural products are present in more than 150 countries, including demanding markets such as the US, Japan, Korea and the EU," said Mr. Phong.

Ms. Nguyen Thi Hai (residing in Ward 6, Cao Lanh City) said she felt very emotional sitting in the space of the 50th anniversary celebration of the country's peace, reviewing a part of history with her children and grandchildren.

"I am 65 years old this year. On the day of the Liberation of the South in 1975, I was only 15 years old but I still remember very clearly the jubilant atmosphere of victory. Hearing the news on the radio, the whole neighborhood ran to tell each other the news. I was so happy I couldn't describe it.

Today I am even more moved because after 50 years, the country has changed a lot. I feel very happy and moved," said Ms. Hai.
