Strong economic resilience of highland women

Sweet potato is commonly grown in the Northwest, especially in Lao Cai and Lai Chau , with high nutritional value. Currently, in Sin Ho commune (Lai Chau province), there are more than 230 hectares of sweet potato, with an average yield of about 15 - 20 tons/ha, each root produces 5 - 6 kg of tubers if grown on fertile soil.

Previously, the wholesale price of sweet potatoes was quite low. As of the beginning of the 2023 crop, the wholesale price was only about 6,000 VND/kg for large tubers and from 2,000 VND/kg for small tubers. The limitation in accessing the large market has caused many harvests to pass with the worry of a good harvest but low prices. However, when sold retail on e-commerce platforms, depending on the size, it can be sold for up to 20,000 - 35,000 VND/kg, bringing a relatively good income to people in the highlands.

In order to support Sin Ho people in promoting their culture and products to consumers nationwide, and at the same time promote the consumption of sweet potatoes on the platform, TikTok Shop and the People's Committee of Sin Ho commune have recently coordinated to launch the campaign "Sin Ho rises". Thanks to that, the total output of sweet potatoes consumed through TikTok Shop in September - October reached more than 300 tons - an impressive milestone showing the power of e-commerce. Notably, the majority of sellers participating in the LIVE session are ethnic minority women living in the area.

Directly participating in sales with the people, attracting more than 4.5 million views, Chairman of Sin Ho Commune People's Committee Le Ba Son affirmed that the success of the campaign shows "the strong economic resilience of highland women when given the opportunity and tools to access large markets through e-commerce". This is a step that brings direct economic value and opens a new direction for ethnic minorities on their journey to participate in the digital economy.

Ms. Bich Hong (Miss Ba Tay Bac), the creator and leader of the community of sellers in Sin Ho, said: "We often tell each other that each order sent is an affirmation that we can break the stereotypes about women doing business."

According to Ms. Bich Hong, the local government and people of Sin Ho commune are aiming to diversify products processed from ginseng (such as bottled drinking water, ginseng vermicelli...) to increase economic value. In addition, during the upcoming Tet holiday, people in the commune plan to bring other key products of Sin Ho land such as angelica ginseng, dodder, ancient apple trees... "In the future, women in the commune will research to create dried products to serve people nationwide all year round".

Supporting digital infrastructure and digital capacity for people in mountainous areas

Two Mong ethnic sisters, Vu Thi Chu (born in 1999) and Vu Thi Xia (born in 2000), are living proof of the change thanks to e-commerce. Growing up in a poor family, finishing 9th grade, getting married, having children, working hard all year round on the fields, there were times when they could not earn 1 million VND in a month. When they learned about TikTok Shop through training sessions, they were initially self-conscious, self-conscious and afraid of technology. But the desire to escape poverty and send their children to school motivated them.

With just a phone, they started filming simple video clips introducing the ginseng. After less than a year, each person was able to generate an astonishing income - tens of millions of dong per month from selling ginseng.

Ms. Vu Thi Chu shared: “This journey has given me the opportunity to learn new things, bringing me an income that I probably never dared to dream of in my entire life. My children will not have to drop out of school early, and I can create jobs for some people around me.” The two sisters even livestreamed the sale of 4 tons of ginseng for free to the villagers.

Ms. Tran Thi Tan, Director of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) of TikTok Shop, said that in the process of promoting national digital transformation, towards a comprehensive and inclusive digital economy, one of the major challenges today is narrowing the development gap between the upstream and downstream regions, especially in helping ethnic minorities access and participate in the digital economy.

TikTok Shop’s socio-economic development model for highland and ethnic minority areas focuses on two key pillars: training and community building. The specialized training program equips people with modern business thinking and basic to advanced knowledge of channel building, content creation, and store operation. From there, TikTok Shop coordinates with local authorities to launch an economic movement and community building so that people in highland and ethnic minority areas can learn, support, and develop together.

Not just a single program for a highland commune, TikTok Shop aims to build a model to implement national policies on socio-economic development for ethnic minorities and mountainous areas through the application of technology and e-commerce. After the success of Sin Ho, TikTok Shop continues to survey and expand the model to other communes and provinces to support the building of a digital ecosystem for the community, especially highland women, to develop sustainable livelihoods, increase income and promote the local economy.

With a strong technology platform, TikTok Shop is committed to supporting digital infrastructure and digital capacity for highland people, especially women, to gradually break down geographical and technological barriers, creating opportunities for highland people to participate and develop thanks to the digital economy.
