The "nucleus" of the value chain

In restructuring agriculture towards commodity and sustainability, the “handshake” between farmers - cooperatives - enterprises has become the “key” for Lao Cai agricultural products to affirm their brand. Cooperatives and enterprises are playing a central role in building a chain of links, shortening the path from production to market.

In Hung Khanh commune, Yazamaki Vietnam Co., Ltd. is a typical example in value chain development.

The enterprise has coordinated to build an Bat Do bamboo and shoot growing area of ​​over 2,000 hectares, linking with a series of cooperatives and cooperative groups in the communes of Hung Khanh, Luong Thinh, and Tran Yen to establish 14 purchasing points.

Thanks to the close cooperation contract, each year the Company processes and exports over 1,000 tons of products, with a revenue of over 50 billion VND, creating stable jobs for about 100 local workers with an average income of over 6 million VND/person/month.

The company closely links the value chain with the people from the stage of land selection - planting techniques - purchasing - processing to exporting products. Bat Do bamboo shoots are signed long-term consumption contracts with businesses, with stable purchasing prices.

"Every year, the company will adjust the purchase price in a way that benefits farmers," said Mr. Ngo Xuan Khai, Manager of Yazamaki Company.

To create a linkage model in bamboo shoot development, local authorities have mobilized bamboo growers to form cooperatives and unions, creating a "bridge" between businesses and farmers in purchasing and consuming products.

Mr. Pham Ngoc Lam - Director of Bat Do Hung Khanh Bamboo Shoots Cooperative shared: In addition to receiving support for fertilizers, new seedlings and linking product consumption, the cooperative also purchases bamboo shoots from people to sell to processing companies.

Not only in the bamboo shoot sector, in Hung Khanh commune there are currently 14 cooperatives and 23 cooperative groups operating effectively with over 2,000 participating members.

In the period of 2021 - 2025, the commune has built 8 value chain linkage projects for all key products; attracting businesses to invest in factories processing key products using high technology.

Up to now, the commune has built 7 OCOP products that meet 3-star standards or higher, including 1 product that meets 4 stars.

Previously, production was small and fragmented, but now people have joined together to produce on a farm and family scale. Key products are developed along the value chain from cooperatives supplying to purchasing enterprises.

“The company focuses on connecting and accompanying people from providing standard seedlings, planting, caring for and consuming products. Signing a three-party contract (farmers - cooperatives - enterprises) with the supervision of the government has created a transparent and sustainable mechanism” - Mr. Nguyen Duc Dung - Director of Yen Thanh Joint Stock Company said.

Cooperatives are not only the “nucleus” that gathers farmers but also the bridge between farmers and businesses, scientists and the government. This model helps reduce intermediaries, control quality, reduce costs and increase product value.

Through cooperatives, businesses link with households to have stable raw material areas, ensuring quality for production. This link also helps households access support policies of businesses such as: capital, seedlings, agricultural materials, transportation policies...

In recent years, Lao Cai province has issued many policies to support the development of collective economy , focusing on building new-style cooperatives in the direction of chain linkage and restructuring the agricultural sector. From small, fragmented models, cooperatives have become the economic support for thousands of households.

The province currently has 1,429 cooperatives, attracting nearly 42,000 members, including 816 agricultural cooperatives, 294 industrial-construction cooperatives, 301 trade-service cooperatives and 18 units in the fields of finance, banking and insurance. The average income of workers in cooperatives reaches nearly 60 million VND/year. By the end of 2026, Lao Cai strives to establish 120 new cooperatives and 405 cooperative groups, with the average income of members and workers in cooperatives reaching 62.4 million VND/year, creating new jobs for nearly 20,000 workers.

The chain of cooperatives in production and consumption of products is opening a sustainable direction for the province's rural economy. Cooperatives are the core, the important link connecting farmers with businesses, between producers and consumers, creating a foundation for agricultural products to improve quality, value and affirm their brands, opening a sustainable direction for the rural economy.
