On the afternoon of November 24, Mr. Du Thai Binh (residing in Nam Can commune, Ca Mau province) - the owner of the sea crab that was just "crowned" at the Ca Mau Crab Record Setting Contest - said that this is a lotus crab.

"King crab" Ca Mau has just been identified as the species with the largest weight in the world.
"I bought this sea crab from a coastal shrimp farm in Ca Mau province for 7.5 million VND. I contacted and donated the "king crab" of Ca Mau to the Southern Hau River Fisheries Research Institute to make a specimen" - Mr. Binh said.

Many people believe that the green and red crabs weigh at most 1.5 kg/crab; while the lotus crab can weigh more than 2 kg/crab.
Regarding this issue, Dr. Nguyen Viet Bac - lecturer at Ca Mau Community College - shared: "The lotus crab belongs to the scylla serrata species and is considered the largest species in the world. In terms of weight, the second largest is the scylla tranquebarica species, the third is the green crab and the fourth is the red crab".
Previously, the Department of Science and Technology of Ca Mau province organized a contest to establish a record for Ca Mau crabs. This is one of the activities of the 2nd Ca Mau Crab Festival - 2025, taking place from November 16 to 22.
On the evening of November 22, the organizers awarded the first prize of the contest to Mr. Du Thai Binh, who owned the largest crab weighing 1,820 kg. The "king of crabs" who won the contest will be nominated to set a Vietnamese record.
In 2022, Ca Mau organized the "largest Ca Mau crab" contest within the framework of the "First Ca Mau Crab Festival". Afterwards, the organizers awarded the first prize worth 15 million VND to the owner of the largest crab in Ca Mau weighing 1.452 kg, Mr. Du Thai Binh.
