Consequences of gambling on cockfighting

( Quang Ngai Newspaper) - Recently, on Bau Co River, in Nghia Dien Commune (Tu Nghia), two men, one 34 years old and one 39 years old, drowned, suspected to be related to a cockfighting case in a local acacia garden.

The above is just one of countless deaths from swimming across the river to escape after being inspected by the police. While dozens of gamblers at the cockfighting arena ran in panic to escape, some people chose to jump into the river and paid with their lives. More than 20 people jumped into the Bac Lieu River, in Lang Tron Ward, Gia Rai Town (Bac Lieu) in April 2020 after the cockfighting gambling den was destroyed by the authorities. Some people drowned from this escape by river because they did not know how to swim.

Most of the cockfighting arenas were organized by gamblers along the river. When discovered, the remaining 3 sides on land were “sealed” by the authorities, the gamblers had to choose the river to escape, but not everyone knew how to swim, so tragedy happened to them.

Depending on the amount of money gamblers are involved in each cockfight, appropriate penalties will be applied to them, but one thing is for sure, they will not have to pay with their lives if they do not try to escape like that.

Cockfighting has long been a popular form of entertainment in rural areas. Many people raise fighting cocks professionally to provide the best “fighting cocks” for cockfighting arenas. At first, it was just a game to prove to the opponent their level of cockfighting. If there was any competition, it was just a drinking session.

However, from those drinking parties with winners and losers, the owners of the fighting cocks switched to betting with money. It is very difficult to know which cock will win after each match if only looking at the appearance of each cock. Therefore, the "downside" of the gamblers always depends on each move of the cock they choose. Some people think they will win but suddenly lose because of the dangerous move of the cock that seems to give up. That is the attraction of cockfights.

But if each cockfight ended with a round of drinking, the joy of the “supporters” on both sides would be complete. The authorities also cannot pursue such healthy cockfighting arenas.

The transformation from healthy entertainment to gambling with money up to tens of millions of dong per cockfighting has led to many unpredictable consequences. If not arrested for gambling, many people still lose everything through participating in cockfighting for money. But the most painful thing is that some people have to die unjustly because of cockfighting for money like the cases above.
