On October 22, the Vietnam Plastics Association (VPA) celebrated its 35th anniversary. The event marked a proud milestone for the Vietnamese plastics industry, opening up a dialogue on development orientation in a new era - where innovation, circular economy and social responsibility prevail.
Ms. Huynh Thi My - Vice President and General Secretary of the Vietnam Plastics Association, called on the VPA business community to shift the growth model from quantity development to quality improvement, invest systematically in ecological design, raise quality standards and improve capacity to meet environmental commitments, in order to anticipate the growing green consumption trend.

Mr. Dinh Duc Thang, Chairman of VPA emphasized: “Vietnam is entering a new era of development with increasingly strict requirements on the environment, tariffs and international green standards. This is both a challenge and a driving force for the plastics industry to restructure, innovate technology and design, promote the circular economy, increase recycling and develop environmentally friendly materials”. He called for the consensus of the business community to build a sustainable development model, thereby affirming its domestic position, firmly integrating and becoming an important link in the global supply chain.
Suggesting international experience in “keeping plastic in the economy, but out of the ocean”, the Chairman of VPA sent the message “Aspiration to reach out” as a guideline for the entire industry. At the same time, he suggested that the industry should take the initiative in raw material sources, reduce dependence when more than 70% of plastic resins still have to be imported, by strongly developing the domestic petrochemical industry; firmly pursuing the goal of green development – circulation in parallel with high growth, actively contributing to the Government ’s double-digit GDP growth target in the coming years.
Meanwhile, from a strategic perspective, Prof. Dr. Vu Minh Khuong (Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy - National University of Singapore) proposed a breakthrough roadmap for the Vietnamese plastics industry. In which, digitalization and automation are the main driving forces, public-private partnership is the implementation method, and circular economy is the operating framework towards sustainable development and enhancing the industry's competitive position in the region and globally.
Within the framework of the event, a memorandum of understanding was also signed between VPA and the Vietnam Waste Recycling Association for the period 2025-2028. Accordingly, the two sides will coordinate to develop technical standards for recycled materials, share technology and market data, train human resources, pilot local recycling collection and classification models, and support businesses to meet traceability, certification and environmental standards requirements in major export markets.
