STO - Finding an outlet for agricultural products, Mr. Huynh Van Luc, Phuoc Truong A hamlet, My Phuoc commune, My Tu district ( Soc Trang ) has converted ineffective rice-growing land to growing squash. On average, his family earns more than 160 million VND per year. In the coming time, Mr. Luc will continue to maintain this model.

Mr. Huynh Van Luc, Phuoc Truong A hamlet, My Phuoc commune, My Tu district (Soc Trang) shared: “I have 1.3 hectares of land for growing rice twice a year. Due to the natural characteristics of the land and the impact of climate change, rice cultivation has not been favorable for many years. After considering the pros and cons, I decided to switch to growing other crops. Before growing other crops, I researched and learned from many people's experiences. Once I met a trader in Hau Giang , they agreed with me to provide melon seeds and guarantee the output of melon after harvest. The trader and I signed a contract to link up the consumption of melon. So, I converted 5,000m2 of rice land to grow melon.”

According to Mr. Luc, in the first crop of growing squash, with only 5,000m2 of land, he brought in tens of millions of VND in profit, many times higher than growing rice. Therefore, in 2022, Mr. Luc boldly converted the entire remaining rice cultivation area to growing squash, with a total area of 1.3ha. Mr. Luc also intercropped cucumbers. Cucumbers take about 2.5 months to grow and harvest, earning 24 million VND/1.3ha. As for squash, from planting to fruiting is 45 days and the harvest time lasts up to 3 months. With 1.3ha of squash, the yield is 300 - 320kg/day, with 27 tons of good quality squash sold until the end of the season. The selling price is guaranteed by traders at 5,000 VND/kg, minus costs, the profit is more than 80 million VND/crop. Winter melon can be grown 2-3 times a year. If grown 2 times a year, the revenue will be more than 160 million VND/year.

“Compared to many other vegetables, squash can withstand rain well, even if it is flooded for a few days, it still grows normally. In the hot season, you only need to water the squash once a day, in the rainy season, you don’t need to water. The squash growing area is 1.3 hectares, the investment cost for making trellis and covering the ground with nylon to prevent weeds is about 50 million VND, which can be used for more than 3 years. From now on, I will continue to grow squash because the output is stable and the profit is quite good,” Mr. Huynh Van Luc added.

Deputy Director of Soc Trang Agricultural Extension Center Lieu Nghia Tin said that, like other types of squash, squash is attacked by a number of pests such as snails, fruit flies, ladybugs, leaf miners, green leaf-eating worms, thrips, planthoppers, root rot, leaf scorch, leaf spots, downy mildew... causing leaves to dry and tear, leading to poor growth and wilting of the plant. Therefore, squash growers need to prevent diseases. Regularly monitor the growth process of the plant, detect pests early for timely prevention and treatment. Regarding the squash growing model with output linkage of Mr. Huynh Van Luc's household, the unit highly appreciates the linkage of product consumption between traders and farmers. It is expected that the unit will meet and discuss with traders about the linkage of consumption of other agricultural products, to deploy a model of growing a variety of agricultural products to households in localities in the province, contributing to increasing income for farmers...
