Soc Trang develops sustainable cattle farming.

STO - Over the years, in addition to focusing on improving the quality of specialty rice varieties, high-quality rice, and developing high-tech shrimp farming to promote sustainable agricultural development and increase farmers' income, Soc Trang province has also focused on developing dairy and beef cattle farming. To achieve this, the province has implemented the Cattle Farming Development Project. Through the project, the number of cattle has increased significantly, meaning increased income for farmers and a more stable life for their families.

Over the course of the Cattle Development Project in the province, the province's cattle herd has increased in both quantity and quality, averaging an annual increase of 1.11-2%. Specifically, the province currently has over 54,000 cattle, including over 48,357 beef cattle and over 5,718 dairy cattle; the annual beef production supplied to the market reaches over 2,200 tons, and the fresh milk production supplied to dairy processing companies is over 13,860 tons. To effectively support participating households in the project, the province has established a Cattle Development Project Management Board to implement activities such as propaganda, technical training, and other support programs. In 2024 alone, the Project Management Board distributed nearly 2,500 promotional materials and technical guides on beef and dairy cattle farming, as well as capacity building programs for cattle farming cooperatives and associations in the province.

In addition, to increase the proportion of female cattle, the relevant agency organized the insemination of over 11,100 doses of artificial insemination for more than 48,300 cows, with a pregnancy rate of over 71%; supported over 3,000 doses of artificial insemination for more than 1,600 cows in localities throughout the province. Improved insemination to crossbreed local cattle with larger, meatier breeds such as Zebu and Red Sindhi; supported over 8,000 doses of high-yield beef cattle insemination for more than 4,000 beef cattle, creating Zebu crossbred cattle weighing over 250kg each, increasing the weight of beef cattle at sale. Ear tagging was performed on 5,000 breeding cows and heifers over 12 months old for breed management; supported 5,000 sets of ear tags and 940 beef cattle farming management books for households.

Mr. Danh Thol, from Dai Tam commune, My Xuyen district, shared: "I have been raising beef cattle for over 15 years. Since participating in the Cattle Farming Development Project, I have received guidance from technical staff on how to care for cattle, feed them suitable types of grass, and even support with grass seeds to grow for the cattle. They also instructed me on how to compost straw to create a feed source for the cattle when grass is scarce during the dry season. In addition, the project supported the construction of manure pits and biogas digesters, which both prevent environmental pollution and utilize the gas as fuel, reducing monthly fuel costs for my family. Thanks to this, my family's cattle farming has been successful, and the income from selling beef cattle is over 100 million VND per year."

To ensure the healthy and stable reproductive development of the cattle herds participating in the project, and to maintain a consistent supply of fresh milk, the Project Management Board has provided hundreds of kilograms of lemongrass seeds for planting in cattle farming areas. To date, the area of pastures has reached 2,100 hectares, providing 60% of the green fodder for the cattle; supported farmers with corn seeds to grow corn for sale, increasing income and utilizing the corn stalks as feed for the cattle, covering an area of 20 hectares. Supported the construction of 100 models for treating solid waste from cattle farming at participating households to minimize environmental pollution; supported the construction of 5 VietGAP-certified cattle farming models, after implementation, all participating households have been certified as meeting VietGAP standards for beef cattle farming. Supported participating households in fattening over 350 beef cattle to increase weight and meat quality, helping farmers increase their income after selling the cattle.

For dairy cattle, the Project Management Board has implemented and maintained 42 advanced dairy farming models, along with supporting households in repairing barns, milking machines, grass choppers, and manure pits; supporting solutions to improve feed efficiency, grass quality, and nutrition for the herd; thereby improving body condition and enhancing reproductive efficiency and milk production. To protect the health of the dairy herd, the Project Management Board also coordinated with local livestock and veterinary stations in the project area, guiding farmers to strictly control several infectious diseases in cattle such as lumpy skin disease, foot-and-mouth disease, and hemorrhagic septicemia…

Comrade Dao Van Bay, Deputy Head of the Livestock and Veterinary Department and Deputy Director of the Soc Trang Provincial Cattle Development Project Management Board, stated that the project's goal is to develop the province's beef cattle herd to 55,000 head, producing over 3,000 tons of meat per year and creating jobs for 10,000 workers. The dairy cattle herd will reach 7,000 head, producing 15,000 tons of fresh milk per year and creating jobs for 5,000 workers. To achieve these goals, the Project Management Board will continue to improve the productivity and quality of beef and dairy cattle breeds through artificial insemination using imported bull semen. They will also shift farming methods from 4-5 cows per household to 5-6 cows per household, encouraging the development of cattle farming towards family farms and large-scale farms. Furthermore, they will continue to improve the human resources for artificial insemination, particularly by integrating state management into livestock farming. Improve the quality of green fodder, make good use of agricultural and industrial by-products, and apply scientific and technological advancements, mechanization, and automation in livestock farming. Strengthen the linkages between the production and consumption chain of cattle farming products. Replicate effective and biosecure cattle farming models, ensuring disease safety; coordinate with banks to create conditions for farmers to access loans to invest in increasing herds, aiming to develop cattle farming as a profession…
