A poll published in the Hill newspaper found that American public opinion viewed the war as the most unjustified conflict of the last century.
Specifically, 44% of adults surveyed said the Vietnam War was unjust, while 50% of respondents said they still had no clear idea of what the United States was fighting for in Vietnam.
About 25% of the survey respondents were US veterans of the Vietnam War, of whom 46% said the conflict was unjust.
“Overall, Americans tell us that the United States should not have gotten involved in a conflict that cost the lives of more than 58,000 service members and many, many more Vietnamese soldiers and civilians,” said Spencer Kimball, director of the Emerson College poll.
According to the survey results, 43% of respondents said the US has not learned its lesson and is still not more cautious when participating in foreign conflicts.
