Clam diggers on Ne Island (Thanh Hoa) often depart from the mainland at midnight, when the tide is low, to start their work. At this time, the weather is cool, and when the sun comes up, they return to the mainland. Currently, there are about 60 households farming clams on Ne Island.
According to clam rakers in Hau Loc district (Thanh Hoa), their work starts when it is still dark. They wake up, bring flashlights and drinking water, and follow each other to clam farms on Ne island to make a living.
The clam raking profession of the people of Thanh Hoa coastal village often follows the tide. When the tide recedes, they start their work. There are days when clam rakers are busy working from 3am to 9am.
One day of clam raking, the clam farm owner will pay about 300,000 VND/person.
Clam raking tools are very simple, just need a 3-nail rake, basket and gloves.
At around 6am the clam diggers will rest and have breakfast before continuing their work.
To cope with the saltiness of the sea and the intense heat of the summer, women often wear long-sleeved clothes, hats or wide-brimmed caps, and cover their faces.
Currently, the price of clams ranges from 10,000 to 15,000 VND/kg depending on the type. After harvesting, clams are packed in bags and wait for water to be loaded onto boats to be transported to shore for consumption.
