Chelsea coach scolds his student for 'stupid' red card

Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca described the red card Liam Delap received at the end of the match against Wolves early this morning (October 30, Vietnam time) as 'very stupid and shameful'.

Liam Delap returned from a 10-week injury layoff, but the 22-year-old striker was sent off just 26 minutes after coming on as a second-half substitute.

Delap received two consecutive yellow cards for pushing Yerson Mosquera and aggressively attacking Wolves midfielder Emmanuel Agbadou.

That means Delap will miss the away trip to Tottenham in round 10 of the Premier League this weekend.

When asked about his student's red card, coach Maresca reacted harshly: "Delap deserved to be sent off. He made a stupid mistake."

The Italian added: "Chelsea could have avoided all three goals. Certainly today we got a very stupid red card and it was completely unnecessary.

After the first yellow card, I told Delap four or five times to stay calm. But Liam is a player who, when he comes on the pitch, probably only plays for himself. He doesn't listen to the people around him."

This is the sixth red card that Chelsea players have received in nine matches, including Enzo Maresca being sent off for celebrating at the end of the win over Liverpool.

The Blues coach continued: "I completely understand and sympathize with the red cards in the matches against Brighton (Chalobah) and MU (Robert Sanchez). But the red cards against Nottingham Forest and Wolves today were both avoidable.

It's a shame Delap got two yellow cards in less than 10 minutes. That's not good for the team at all."
