After Man United finished their final match in the 2024-2025 Premier League, coach Ruben Amorim and his team went to Malaysia to prepare for a friendly match with the ASEAN All-Stars. The ASEAN All-Stars team, led by coach Kim Sang-sik, consists of top players selected from all 12 AFF member associations. The four players representing Vietnam in the match are Hoang Duc, Hai Long, Van Vi and Duy Manh.
Coach Kim Sang-sik once shared: “It is a great honor to lead the best players from all ASEAN countries in a match of such importance. We are not only representing our countries but also showing the world the pride, spirit and strength of our region.”

Other notable players in the ASEAN All-Stars squad include Azam Azmi, Adib Abdul, Haziq Nadzli, Declan Lambert, Sergio Aguero (Malaysia); Worachit, Ben Davis, Patiwat (Thailand); Joao Pedro (Timor Leste); Maung Maung Lwin (Myanmar); Bounphachan Bounkong (Laos); Kan Mo, Andres Nieto (Cambodia); Muhammad Ferarri (Indonesia); Azwan Ali Rahman (Brunei); Irfan Fandi (Singapore)...
In his pre-match press conference, Man United manager Ruben Amorim said: “We are not here just to play a friendly. I will not talk about long-term goals at the moment, it is important to focus on one step at a time. The immediate goal is to win the first match, then we will think about the rest.
Every game we play is watched by millions of people. That means we have to show the utmost respect and give our all, no matter what the game. It’s great to see the love you have for Manchester United, even in difficult seasons. That connection is what makes Manchester United one of the greatest clubs in the world. It’s an honour to be here.”
Meanwhile, coach Kim Sang-sik shared: “I am very happy and honored to be selected by the ASEAN Football Federation as the coach to lead the ASEAN All-Star Team. I thank Man United and the sponsors for their presence.
ASEAN All-Stars is a team that gathers many good players in Southeast Asia. Although we don’t have much time to prepare, only one day to practice, we will still try our best to contribute.”
Sergio Aguero, representative of the ASEAN All Stars team, said: “We all wanted to beat MU in this match. Although we didn’t have much time to prepare and faced time constraints, the team played their best once they got on the field.”
For coach Kim Sang-sik, the upcoming match will certainly be an interesting experience. Not only will he face a world-famous team, but managing a squad of Southeast Asian stars will also be a challenge. Mr. Kim will have the opportunity to combine his students from the Vietnamese team to create a cohesive team.
This is a quality match for the Vietnamese players and coach Kim Sang-sik before entering the 2027 Asian Cup qualifiers against Malaysia on June 10.
The international friendly match between Man United and ASEAN All-Stars will take place at 7:45 p.m. on May 28, 2025 at Bukit Jalil National Stadium, Malaysia, and will be broadcast live on the Southeast Asian Football Federation's Youtube channel.
