Coach Shin Tae Yong has officially lost his position at Ulsan HD Club, just 65 days after being appointed as head coach of the team.
This information was confirmed by a series of Korean newspapers such as Chosun and MK Sports on October 9. According to Ulsan's announcement, the decision to terminate the contract was made after the board of directors assessed that the team was no longer suitable for the direction set by Mr. Shin.
Chosun newspaper wrote: "Ulsan officially terminated the contract with coach Shin Tae Yong, because the team is in serious decline and is at risk of falling into the relegation group."
The Korean coach was appointed on August 5, half a year after he was suddenly fired by the Indonesian Football Federation from the position of head coach of the country's football team.
During that time, Mr. Shin served as Vice President of the Korea Football Association (since April). In early August, he decided to resign to return to coaching.
The defending champions South Korea initially hoped that Shin's international experience would help them revive after a period of instability.
Ulsan HD won a ticket to the 2026 FIFA Club World Cup. But it seems that being distracted by this arena has caused them to lose form, going through a series of 5 winless matches in the summer period.
As a result, coach Kim Pan Gon was fired and replaced by Mr. Shin. But after the former head coach of the Korean team took over, things got even worse.
In the next 8 rounds, Ulsan HD only won 1, drew 3 and lost 4. The offense was silent, while the defense made continuous mistakes, causing the team to fall deep in the K-League rankings. Currently, Ulsan HD is ranked 10/12 teams, and faces a very clear risk of relegation.
The 0-2 defeat to a direct rival in the relegation race last weekend became the "last straw".
"We thank coach Shin Tae Yong for his efforts over the past time, but the team needs a change to regain its position," Ulsan HD's board of directors announced after firing Mr. Shin.
This is another unforgettable milestone in the glorious but also controversial career of coach Shin Tae Yong.
In early 2025, he was fired by the Indonesian Football Federation due to poor performance in the AFF Cup - a tournament in which the national team did not have naturalized stars because they were busy playing football in Europe.
More importantly, it was Mr. Shin's controversial behavior that "broke the camel's back", making President Erick Thohir unhappy. And now, the 54-year-old strategist was fired for bringing a championship candidate to the relegation zone.
