Phu Quoc airport completed on schedule and with quality to serve APEC 2027 Conference

(Chinhphu.vn) - This was the content discussed at the working session between the leaders of Kien Giang Provincial People's Committee and Vietnam Airports Corporation (ACV) on management, flight operations and investment in upgrading airports in Kien Giang province, on June 9.

According to the People's Committee of Kien Giang province, Phu Quoc Airport has reached level 4E, with 1 runway capable of receiving large aircraft such as A350, B787 and 4 million passengers and 5,000 tons of cargo/year. The apron and runway have 9 aircraft parking positions, including 1 position for large aircraft B777 or equivalent.

Regarding planning, in the 2021-2030 period, the 4E airport will have a capacity of about 10 million passengers/year and 25,000 tons of cargo/year; operating aircraft types B747, B787, A350 and equivalent; vision to 2050, the 4E airport (according to ICAO standard code) will have a capacity of about 18 million passengers/year and 50,000 tons of cargo/year; operating aircraft types B747, B787, A350 and equivalent.

For Rach Gia airport, in 2022, it will transport over 51,200 passengers, in 2023 it will decrease to more than 33,300 passengers, in 2024 it will decrease to more than 9,500 passengers. The current land use status of the airport is more than 586,000 m2 managed by civil aviation. Currently, Rach Gia airport's runway was built in 1960 and was renovated and upgraded twice by the Southern Airports Cluster (in 1997 and from October 2006 to April 2007) and repaired and reinforced with a soft-cover structure in 2014, and is still in use today, including a runway measuring 1,500mx30m; connecting taxiways measuring 49.28 mx 15 m; aircraft parking area measuring 165.7 mx 87.6 m.

Chairman of Kien Giang Provincial People's Committee Nguyen Thanh Nhan said that in the coming time, with the province's tourism development momentum, and the merger of An Giang province with Kien Giang province, and the new provincial headquarters in Kien Giang, the demand for flights will increase sharply. Kien Giang province has been building an orientation to develop Rach Gia airport into a multi-functional aviation area, playing a strategic role in connecting with Phu Quoc pearl island and developing the Mekong Delta region.

Regarding investment in Phu Quoc Airport, implementing Resolution No. 01 dated June 1, 2025 of the Government on investment in expanding Phu Quoc International Airport, aiming to serve the APEC 2027 Conference; The Government assigned the People's Committee of Kien Giang province to select domestic investors and organize the implementation of the Phu Quoc International Airport expansion investment project to ensure compliance with the nature of a civil-military shared airport; recover and transfer the intact state of Phu Quoc International Airport infrastructure assets invested and managed by the State from the Ministry of Construction to the People's Committee of Kien Giang province to manage, handle and organize the implementation of the Phu Quoc International Airport expansion investment project.

At the same time, Kien Giang province shall approve the investment policy and adjust the investment policy (if necessary) of the Phu Quoc International Airport expansion investment project according to the authority specified in Article 1 of this Resolution to ensure compliance with regulations; take full responsibility for selecting a domestic investor with capacity to implement the Phu Quoc International Airport expansion investment project according to the authority, ensuring publicity and transparency; direct and supervise the implementation of the project to ensure quality and timely completion to serve the APEC 2027 Conference; handle related issues according to regulations, ensuring the harmony of interests of the State, investors and related parties, preventing corruption, loss and waste.

Chairman of the Board of Directors of Vietnam Airports Corporation Vu The Phiet said that ACV has completed the review of all aviation infrastructure assets; completed the measurement and determination of the boundaries of land assets of the enterprise and the State; and is responsible for maintaining and operating the infrastructure to ensure uninterrupted and absolute safety in the exploitation and management of Phu Quoc International Airport during the project expansion process.

According to Mr. Vu The Phiet, in implementing the project to expand Phu Quoc International Airport to serve APEC 2027, Vietnam Airports Corporation has established a working group to closely monitor the situation and requested Kien Giang to have a focal point to work with the working group to discuss and carry out tasks without interrupting the exploitation and operation of the Airport as well as coordinate in handling assets in accordance with the spirit of Resolution No. 01 of the Government on investment in expanding Phu Quoc International Airport, the goal of serving APEC 2027 Conference and in accordance with the provisions of law.
