'How can a freshman compete with a senior?'

Parents in Phu Yen believe that the rules of the 2025 School Sports Tournament that require first graders to compete with fifth graders and sixth graders to compete with ninth graders are unfair.

The Departmentof Education and Training of Phu Yen province has just issued the regulations for the 2024-2025 school year School Sports Tournament for students of the province.

Accordingly, the tournament will take place from April 12 to 22 in Tuy Hoa City. Participants are students from primary, secondary, high schools and multi-level schools (public and private schools).

This tournament has 8 competitions including: football, volleyball, basketball, swimming, athletics, shuttlecock, badminton, table tennis.

What makes parents and students concerned and give their opinions is that swimming, with the competition content of freestyle swimming and breaststroke, is divided into 3 levels as follows:

Middle school level competes in 50m, 100m, 200m and freestyle relay: 4x100m mixed (2 men, 2 women).

High school level competes in 50m, 100m, 200m, 400m and freestyle relay: 4x100m mixed (2 men, 2 women).

Primary school level competes in 50m, 100m and freestyle relay: 4x50m mixed (2 male, 2 female).

Each age group, each event, each unit can send a maximum of 2 athletes. Each athlete can only register to compete in a maximum of 2 individual distances and 1 relay event.

Reflecting to Tuoi Tre Online, some parents said that this rule is unfair to students.

Ms. Le Thu Tr. (a parent of a student in Binh Kien commune, Tuy Hoa city) said that the organizing committee let primary school students take the same exam, and secondary school students take the same exam, meaning that students in grades 1-5 take the same exam; students in grades 6-9 take the same exam to calculate their achievements.

"In my opinion, with this organization, first and second graders cannot swim against fourth and fifth graders. It is difficult for sixth and seventh graders to compete against eighth and ninth graders because of the huge difference in age, physical condition, height, etc. In sports competitions from professional to amateur, each athlete or team is divided by age and weight," Ms. Tr. commented.

"We hope that the Phu Yen Department of Education and Training will adjust the rules to create a truly useful playground for each age group and create excitement for the children," Ms. Tr. expressed.

Will adjust the tournament rules

On the afternoon of March 28, Mr. Tran Khac Le - Director of the Department of Education and Training of Phu Yen - said that he had received feedback from parents and schools. The Department will meet to adjust the tournament rules and will soon announce them before the Phu Yen School Sports Tournament takes place in the 2024-2025 school year.
