Students no longer rely on rote learning in literature.

At the exam center at Vo Truong Toan Secondary School (District 1), Lam Chu Hoang An, a student from Vo Truong Toan Secondary School, commented that the literature exam not only required conveying knowledge from textbooks but also addressing experiences outside of school, which is completely different from last year's exam. "To prepare for this exam, I had to review all the knowledge in the curriculum; just 'cramming' isn't enough," the male student said.

Candidates share their thoughts after the Literature exam.

Vo Hoang Song Ai, a student from Tran Van On Secondary School (District 1), commented: "With the open-ended nature of this year's exam questions, rote learning and memorization will not be effective. Because a single work encompasses many different themes such as dedication, patriotism, and camaraderie, writers need to broaden their thinking and assess whether the chosen work corresponds to and represents the theme posed in the question."

That's not the case. If students rely solely on rote memorization, they usually only know certain topics from the literary works. Therefore, if they mechanically write essays based on pre-written texts, it's very easy to miss the question's content, even if they "hit the jackpot" with their chosen topic.

Le Nguyen Truc Linh, a student from Tran Van On Secondary School (District 1), couldn't hide her joy with the literature exam. "Although the questions were very open-ended, I still needed to study hard to apply the knowledge correctly," Linh shared.

Do Nhu Khanh Linh, a student from Vo Truong Toan Secondary School, was excited that the exam question both suggested that candidates should choose the prose work " The Ivory Comb " or the poem " Speaking to My Child" if writing about family feelings, and encouraged reading habits through submitting essays to the book club.

Master Tran Nguyen Tuan Huy, head of the literature department at Tran Boi Co Secondary School, District 5, Ho Chi Minh City, commented that this year's 10th grade entrance exam essay "shows creativity, individuality, and the unique character of Ho Chi Minh City. It still represents beautiful pieces in the hearts of each person, gradually unfolding with each 10th grade entrance exam season."

The joy of completing the literature exam.

Commenting in more detail on each question, Mr. Tuan Huy said: "The reading comprehension section was very novel. The questions still followed a clear competency-based approach. Although it was a reading comprehension section, the questions didn't just require rote reading and answering; they still needed to stimulate the test-taker's thinking. This year's social commentary question was relatively difficult and highly open-ended. The interesting thing here is that students didn't just discuss a dogmatic issue, but when considering the issue within a social context, they had to think and ponder, thereby drawing practical lessons and actions for themselves."

"Students are given control over their choices and emotions to create their products. Therefore, this year's 10th-grade entrance exam essay question is not only about selection and competition, but also about satisfying students' emotions. Because they get to choose what evokes the strongest feelings in them to create a product for which they are personally responsible," Mr. Tuan Huy explained.
