Thai is one of two outstanding students awarded first prize by the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment in the Plastic Reduction Ambassador contest in early December in Hanoi.

I share the honor and pride of being born and raised in Hanoi City - the capital of Vietnam. When mentioning Hanoi, people will think of Hoan Kiem Lake, West Lake, Old Quarter, ... with the poetic and romantic scenery of the cool lakeside and bustling streets, an ideal destination for tourists .

“In reality, on the streets of Hanoi, there is a lot of garbage thrown away; plastic bags, water bottles, and cups are left behind right after use. The garbage has made some places on the streets smell, and some rivers are gray and murky due to pollution,” Thai said.

Realizing that, in daily life, my family and I always limit the use of plastic bags, disposable plastic bottles... However, realizing that the family's actions alone are not enough, Thai participated in the Plastic Reduction Ambassador contest with the desire to spread the message that people and friends should join hands to reduce and recycle plastic waste and propagate to many people to have such awareness.

After many days of pondering on how to reach as many people as possible, Thai chose to compose his own lyrics about protecting the environment and reducing plastic waste based on the music of the song “Nhan tuoi 20” by musician Nguyen Le Tam. After that, his father was the one who took him to the studio to record the lyrics and make the video.

At first, he intended to choose a rap song for the contest, but his mother suggested that he choose a song with a lively background music to convey the message more easily. During the process of making the product, Thai also learned how to design videos on Canva software, how to shoot a beautiful video, and how to search for information and images effectively.

I went online to look for images of environmental pollution to make a video. In it, the stories of sea turtles caught in plastic waste, whales accidentally swallowing plastic bags, plastic bottles… made viewers very sad.

Students should bring their own water bottles.

According to Thai, Vietnamese people have the habit of going to the market and buying products using too many plastic bags. There needs to be a solution to reduce plastic waste such as: recycling plastic bags, plastic bottles, reducing plastic products and replacing them with reusable boxes, cloth bags, etc.

To make the video, I took my camera and walked around the area where I live to film. It was a scene from the days before and during Tet, I saw garbage trucks full of plastic bags, plastic boxes, and foam mats being thrown away more than usual. Or during Tet, the amount of plastic waste is more because the garbage collectors go back to their hometowns to celebrate Tet, some people secretly dump garbage in the alley or on the roadside, which is very unsightly.

After returning from the competition, Ma Duc Thai said that it is necessary to promote more strongly so that students bring their own water bottles to school instead of buying bottled water to reduce the amount of plastic bottles.

"In addition, schools should organize forums and extracurricular activities for students about the harmful effects and current situation of plastic waste. It is necessary to include this content in subjects such as Local Education and Civic Education to promote measures to overcome environmental problems and raise awareness of reducing plastic waste," said Thai.

Ms. Pham Thi Thanh Huyen, Thai's mother, said that at home, the family also carries out many activities to reduce plastic waste such as: using cloth bags to carry groceries; using reusable plastic boxes to hold meat, fish, etc. Every time they go to buy coffee or drinks, the parents also set an example for their children by bringing their own water bottles instead of using the convenient paper cups of the restaurant.

According to Ms. Huyen, besides the cultural subjects in class, Thai really likes extracurricular activities. Those activities help him to be active, balance his mind, and connect with many friends near and far, so his family also encourages him a lot. When he shared about the contest, I did not know the scale and form, but I also encouraged him to try his best and be meticulous in whatever he did to have the best contest product," Ms. Huyen shared.
