Workshop to share experiences in implementing the project "Building safer schools against natural disasters"

On September 25, the Lao Cai Provincial Women's Union in collaboration with Save the Children (SCI) organized a workshop to share experiences in implementing the project "Building safer schools against natural disasters in Yen Bai city, Tran Yen district and Van Yen district, Yen Bai province" (old).

Storm No. 3 (Yagi Storm), which made landfall in September 2024, caused heavy human and property damage to the provinces, including Lao Cai province, which was affected by the storm's circulation. Immediately after the storm passed, the Provincial Women's Union mobilized 9 international emergency aid packages with a total budget of over 33 billion VND, supporting essential necessities, kitchen utensils and rebuilding household houses and public works. In particular, SCI has organized relief operations in Luc Yen district (old).

Immediately after the emergency support package in Luc Yen district (old), SCI Organization implemented the Project "Building safer schools against natural disasters in Yen Bai city, Tran Yen district and Van Yen district, Yen Bai province" (old) with a total funding of 9.5 billion VND. The project was implemented from May to September 2025 to focus on repairing school infrastructure and improving disaster response skills for students and teachers at 22 schools in 3 localities: Yen Bai city, Tran Yen district and Van Yen district (old).

After 5 months of implementation, the Project has organized 11 training courses for more than 700 teachers on personal hygiene, disaster risk reduction and school psychological counseling; 47 communication sessions attracted over 10,000 students to participate.

At the same time, the Project supports the repair and upgrading of infrastructure and provides many essential equipment for teaching and playing for students, from televisions, projectors, desks and chairs, school supplies to clean water, sanitation and safe playgrounds. A total of 42 equipment items and 20 small construction projects have been handed over and put into use at schools.

Speaking at the workshop, representatives of the beneficiary schools affirmed the clear effectiveness of the Project: improved facilities, safer and friendlier learning environment. At the same time, it equipped teachers and students with essential life skills to adapt and overcome challenges caused by climate change and natural disasters.
