The information was announced by Google at an event held on the afternoon of July 9. The company said that more than 5,000 billion searches take place on Google each year.

With AI integration, users can ask questions in a variety of ways, not only with keywords but also through voice, images, and videos . Notably, Gen Z is the most active group on Google Search with more queries than any other age group.

Tools like Google Lens, Circle to Search, AI Overviews, and AI Mode on Google Search open up new ways to quickly discover information.

Among them, AI Mode is the most powerful AI search mode with advanced explanation capabilities, understanding multiple content formats, and deeper support through follow-up questions and helpful links.

AI Mode users ask questions 2-3 times longer than regular Google searches.

With the impressive growth of AI Mode and AI Overviews, Google is boosting ads in these two features. Ads in AI Overviews are starting in the US, before rolling out in English to some Southeast Asian countries later this year.

AI Overviews, introduced by Google in 2024, uses AI to create concise summaries of information, directly answering users' complex queries right on the results page.

Thanks to this, users quickly grasp important information without having to visit multiple websites.

However, Google's AI search feature also has a significant impact on website traffic because users no longer need to go directly to the website to view information.

This trend is called “zero-click.” According to SimilarWeb, since the launch of AI Overviews, the percentage of users who did not click on a news site after searching has increased to 69% in May 2025 from 56% in May 2024.

That would see organic visits to news sites — which typically come from Google searches — fall below 1.7 billion in May 2025 from a peak of more than 2.3 billion in mid-2024.

SimilarWeb also released data showing that 37 of the world's 50 largest news domains saw a drop in traffic after AI Overviews were introduced.

Commenting on the above information, a Google spokesperson confirmed that these are baseless speculations, and emphasized that AI search helps people ask more questions, thereby creating new opportunities to discover businesses and content.

Website traffic has plummeted since ChatGPT and AI search Traffic from ChatGPT to news sites is increasing, but not enough to offset the drop in traffic as people increasingly read news directly from AI chatbots or AI-powered search results.
