Foreign experts share at the International Conference on Health Technology Assessment

Prof. Dr. Tran Van Thuan, Deputy Minister of Health, said that Vietnam is striving to achieve the goal of universal health care coverage (HCC). With limited financial resources while the demand for health care is constantly increasing, one of the top concerns is to improve the efficiency of allocating and using health financial resources. This requirement for developing countries like Vietnam is even more urgent when health care costs are increasing while funding for health care is limited. Health technology assessment is considered an effective tool to improve the efficiency of the health system with the goal of supporting policymakers in making evidence-based policy decisions on the selection, payment and optimal use of health technology.

According to Mr. Thuan, in recent times, medical technology assessment activities in Vietnam have made progress but still face many difficulties and challenges. Compared to many countries in the world and in the region, Vietnam is still a country behind in developing medical technology assessment, so it is necessary to strengthen international cooperation and exchange in this field.

According to experts, health technology assessment is a method of evaluating the medical, epidemiological, sociological and economic aspects of health interventions (including drugs, vaccines, medical procedures, medical devices, health services and public health interventions) in many fields such as medicine, sociology and economics.
