Huawei grows strongly thanks to Mate 60

According to a report from Counterpoint Research, Huawei's smartphone sales in China increased by 37% year-on-year, accounting for 12.9% market share in the third quarter of 2023. The growth brought by the Mate 60 is pushing Huawei closer to the list of top 5 smartphone manufacturers by market share in China.

The company said it would continue to optimize its management system, improve efficiency and quality of operations, and refine its sales strategy and product mix. Huawei said its revenue from January to September reached $62.4 billion, up 2.4% year-on-year. However, the revenue growth rate was slower than the 3.1% increase in the first half of 2023.

Mate 60 helps boost Huawei's growth

Huawei used to be Apple’s only worthy competitor in the high-end smartphone segment in China. After being sanctioned by the US in 2019, the company was unable to access important technologies, so Huawei’s smartphones gradually lost their appeal to consumers.

In September 2023, Huawei released the Mate 60 Pro, which is equipped with a 7nm chip and 5G connectivity. Counterpoint Research said that in the first 6 weeks after the phone's launch, Huawei sold 1.6 million Mate 60 Pro units.

Some analysts say Huawei’s return could pose new challenges for Apple in the country. Canalys researcher Lucas Zhong said that if Huawei’s new chips are included in future mid- to low-end phones, the company could take market share from other rivals.

In addition to smartphones, Huawei has also been pushing into cloud computing to diversify its revenue streams and overcome sanctions. In September, the company opened a data center in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, to provide cloud services to customers in the country and other regions in the Middle East, North Africa and Central Asia.

Still, Huawei's telecoms business is under increasing pressure in the West as the European Union (EU) calls on member states to block Huawei from 5G networks on national security grounds.
