Lac Son District: The painful situation of divorce after leaving home

The happy days of the young couple Bui Thi L (born in 1993) and Quach Van X in Van Nghia commune (Lac Son) only lasted until their child was born. After that, life was full of hardships, the young mother had to follow her friends to work as a factory worker in industrial parks outside the province. Life away from home was inherently difficult. But every time she thought of the smile of her child with her husband waiting for her in her hometown, Bui Thi L felt warm and focused on working to earn money to send home to her husband and children. However, the young woman's hopes for a full life suddenly collapsed when she discovered that her husband at home was having an affair...

Lac Son District People's Court staff study divorce case files.

Every time I leave my homeland, I get divorced.

Bitter and resentful, Bui Thi L had to go to the People's Court of Lac Son district herself to file for divorce, accepting the failure of the marriage she had hoped for a happy home. Like Ms. Bui Thi L, after days away from home working at the company, returning home, Ms. Bui Thi H (born in 1993) in An Nghia commune also had a mental breakdown and went to the People's Court of Lac Son district herself to request support and advice on divorce procedures with her husband, Bui Van R, because when Ms. H went away to work, Bui Van R at home had another woman.

Unlike the above cases, after many unsuccessful attempts to persuade his wife, Mr. Quach Van K (born in 1987) in Quy Hoa commune had to go to Lac Son district People's Court to file a divorce petition for his wife, Bui Thi A (born in 1990). Because after a period of working as a worker in a foreign country, Bui Thi A had a life outside of her wife and husband with another man... Recently, in early April 2025, the district People's Court received a petition from Bui Thi T (born in 1987) in Yen Nghiep commune to divorce her husband, Bui Van B (born in 1979). The reason was that after a period of working as a worker in Thai Nguyen , Bui Thi T had a new lover, who is currently pregnant...

According to Comrade Bui Minh Giang, Judge of Lac Son District People's Court, in recent times, the divorce rate among young families in the district has been on the rise. The number of divorce cases has increased every year. In 2024, on average, the District People's Court tried one divorce case per day. In the first months of 2025, the District People's Court accepted 218 divorce cases, of which over 70% were new cases, the rest were old cases. As of April 2025, 152 cases had been resolved, while 66 cases were in the process of being resolved.

Through analysis, the main causes of divorce are family conflicts; violence, gambling, drugs, economic conflicts... However, "it is worth noting that the number of divorces caused by adultery tends to increase. Statistics show that the number of divorces caused by adultery accounts for about 10% of the total number of marriage and family cases that the District People's Court has received and resolved in the past time, of which, the plaintiffs are women, accounting for 90%, mainly women aged 35 and under (accounting for about 80%). Most of them are people who, after working as workers in industrial parks outside the province, far from their families, have had relationships and lived together as husband and wife with other people, many cases filed for divorce when they had an unwanted pregnancy", Judge Bui Minh Giang added.

Families are broken up, children suffer the consequences

In fact, due to the difficult life of the people, young people, especially young couples, have to accept a life away from home to make a living. When women go to work far away, after a while, the family often has conflicts and discord. Many families where the wife comes back from work far away, the husband is jealous and commits acts of violence. Unable to bear the jealousy, the wife files for divorce. In addition, there are also cases where after being away from home, there is an extramarital affair, the family and husband-wife affection fades, so they proactively and unilaterally file for divorce.

According to Judge Lo Van Dan, Chief Justice of Lac Son District People's Court, this situation leaves behind huge consequences. Not only do families break up, but after divorce, many children grow up without the affection and care of their father or mother, or even both. This is a worrying reality. Because in the district, there are many cases of children being abandoned when their parents divorce and their families break up. A typical example is the case of 5 children, the youngest born in 2008, the oldest born in 2017, children of Bui Van T and Bui Thi L in Van Son commune. After the couple divorced, the children had no one to take care of them and had to live on the streets without a place to live, with food and living conditions not guaranteed, sometimes full, sometimes hungry... Or many couples after divorce go away to work far away, leaving their children to be looked after and cared for by relatives such as grandparents and uncles. Due to the lack of adequate and strict supervision and education from relatives, many children emulate their friends and become bad children, seriously violating the law, participating in acts of "intentionally causing injury", "theft of property", "robbery, snatching of property", drug crimes... affecting security, social order and safety in the area, and are handled by the authorities when they are still minors, under 18 years old.

Judge Lo Van Dan, Chief Justice of Lac Son District People's Court, said: This situation is a social issue that needs to be seriously considered to find effective solutions. We believe that socio-economic development and improving people's lives play a key role. Only then can we solve the problem of families and young couples not having to separate, leaving their hometowns to work far away, and family ties will be united and strong.

"On the part of the judicial agencies and the District People's Court, we determined to do a good job of disseminating the law and effectively carry out reconciliation work to reunite families at risk of breaking up," said Judge Bui Minh Giang.
