According to the announcement of the Royal Mint on March 14, this is one of the activities to celebrate the 85th birthday of the late musician and singer.
The coin collection will officially go on sale from March 17, with the prominent design featuring a portrait of Lennon based on a famous photo taken by photographer Bob Gruen in 1974. The photo captured the moment Lennon stood on the roof of his penthouse in New York (USA), where just 6 years later – on December 8, 1980, he was murdered by Mark David Chapman at the age of 40.
On the coin's face, the name "Lennon" appears to the left of the portrait, while to the right is the word "Imagine" – a tribute to the song and album of the same name released in 1971, a year after The Beatles broke up.
Ms. Rebecca Morgan - Director in charge of commemorative coin projects at Royal Mint - shared: "John Lennon can be considered one of the greatest singers and musicians of all time. His contributions to music , social activities and messages of peace will be forever remembered and now preserved forever on this coin."
The release of the John Lennon coin is part of the Royal Mint's “music legends” series, which has previously honoured big names such as Paul McCartney, David Bowie, Queen, the Rolling Stones and Shirley Bassey.
This collection will be produced from a variety of precious metals, including gold and silver, in different color versions.
Prices start at £18.50 ($24) for a £5 coin, while the most expensive version – a £200 gold coin – goes for £6,420 ($8,330).
Although they are legal tender, with such a high price difference, it is unlikely that anyone will use these coins. Instead, they will become valuable collectibles for John Lennon fans and coin collectors around the world .
