Recently, illustrator B.YO publicly accused HYBE Corporation of using her artwork as a reference for a new virtual idol group called SYNDI8, without proper permission.
Specifically, HYBE's subsidiary Supertone initially sent artist B.YO an offer to collaborate on a virtual girl group, along with an original sketch. But when B.YO asked about the cost and detailed requirements, the company cut off contact and unilaterally canceled the collaboration.
After HYBE announced the new virtual girl group concept, fans contacted B.YO to ask if she collaborated with HYBE.
At this time, B.YO discovered that the design for the group SYNDI8 was not the same as the original sketch that HYBE sent her, but was similar to her design style.
B.YO questioned whether his works were used as reference material without his consent.
Virtual girl group SYNDI8 officially debuted on June 27 with 4 members Canary, Nest, Goyo and Raven. The group's first single album "MVP" was released worldwide with 3 songs: "ATOTA" (theme song), "My Fantasy", "True Color".
The group is promoted as operating in a virtual world called Nansy Land - where voices act as the energy generators that power the entire world. SYNDI8 members also use their unique voices to invoke magical powers.
Not only accused of plagiarism, netizens also questioned whether SYNDI8 referenced material from SM Entertainment's girl group aespa.
Canary's Korean pronunciation is "Kanari", which is a play on the name Karina (aespa member). Virtual idol Canary's height and MBTI (personality analysis) (168 cm, MBTI: ENFP) are also similar to Karina's height and MBTI.
Some viewers commented that the album cover of virtual group SYNDI8 reminded them of aespa's "Girls" album cover.
This is not the first time HYBE Group has been embroiled in plagiarism controversy. In the first half of this year, the noise of "ILLIT copying NewJeans" caused a stir in Kpop.
