The Jakarta Post reported that the above information was given by Indonesian Foreign Minister Sugiono in a speech on the country's foreign policy to the diplomatic community on January 10.
“Geostrategically, Indonesia is close to the source of regional disputes in the South China Sea. Indonesia’s stance remains to prioritize peaceful resolution,” Sugiono stressed, adding that Jakarta will continue to push for constructive dialogue on the COC.
Indonesia sees itself as a non-claimant in the South China Sea, a waterway vital to global trade.
In addition, according to Foreign Minister Sugiono, Indonesia will prioritize completing negotiations on free trade agreements and expanding international trade, including with non-traditional partners in Africa and the Pacific .
Regarding Indonesia's joining the BRICS group of leading emerging economies, he affirmed that this is not a deviation in Jakarta's international stance, but an affirmation of the country's free and active foreign policy.
Regarding the Israel-Hamas conflict, he declared that Indonesia will never give up supporting the Palestinian cause, calling for a ceasefire and demanding that Israel take responsibility for its role in the conflict in the Gaza Strip.
