This is the latest incident on this important commercial shipping route. The ship was detained near the Strait of Hormuz, a “bottleneck” for at least three of the world’s oil shipping routes.
The announcement from the US 5th Fleet, based in Bahrain, stated: "The tanker Advantage Sweet, flying the Marshall Islands flag, was seized by Iran while traveling in international waters in the Gulf of Oman."

The announcement did not specify the owner of the ship or its destination, but called on the Iranian government to immediately release the ship.
Iran and the United States have been embroiled in a series of incidents in the sensitive waters of the Gulf of Oman in recent years. The seizure of the ship is just the latest incident in the Strait of Hormuz.
According to the US Navy, Iran has seized at least five commercial ships from the Middle East in the past two years. In July 2019, the Iranian military seized the British-flagged Stena Impero in the same waters for allegedly ramming a fishing boat, and released the ship two months later.
