In addition to the strikes near the Kurdish capital Erbil, the Guards said they had carried out strikes against “perpetrators of terrorist activities” in Iran, including the Islamic State terrorist group.
Three security sources said the explosions were heard in an area about 40 kilometers (25 miles) from Erbil in the Kurdish region, near the U.S. Consulate and residential areas. Two U.S. officials said no U.S. facilities were affected by the missile attack.
The Kurdish government's security council said in a statement that at least four civilians were killed and six wounded in attacks on Erbil, describing the attack as a "crime".
Iraqi medical and security sources said Kurdish millionaire businessman Peshraw Dizayee and several members of his family were among those killed when at least one rocket hit their home. Dizayee owns major real estate businesses in the Kurdistan region.
