Israel airstrike on Gaza hospital, 5 journalists killed

(CLO) Five Palestinian journalists were killed in an Israeli airstrike early on December 26, when their car was attacked right in front of Al-Awda Hospital in the Gaza Strip.

Early on December 26, at least 10 people were killed, including five journalists, and more than a dozen others were injured in Israeli airstrikes on the Gaza Strip, according to reports from medical staff in Gaza.

The journalists were killed when their vehicle was attacked near Al-Awda Hospital in the Nuseirat area of ​​central Gaza. They worked for Al-Quds Al-Youm TV, which is affiliated with the Palestinian Islamic Jihad militant group. The vehicle was marked as a press vehicle and was often used to report from inside the hospital and Nuseirat refugee camp.

Photos posted on social media showed the press van completely charred, with smoke billowing from several directions. The red lettering “press” was left on the van, while the letters “p” and “r” were burnt.

The Israeli military has confirmed that its air force carried out a “targeted” strike on the vehicle. Israel said that members of the Palestinian militant group Islamic Jihad were inside the vehicle, which was the main reason for targeting it. However, this has not been independently verified, and Palestinian media outlets have criticized the attack as targeting journalists.

In addition to the journalists, five other people were killed in an attack on a house in the Zeitoun neighborhood of Gaza City. Medical workers said the death toll could rise as many people were still trapped under the rubble.
