(HNMO) - On the afternoon of May 6, Vietnamese karate athletes competed excellently, bringing home 2 gold medals in the women's team and men's team events for the Vietnamese sports delegation.
These are the first two official gold medals awarded to Vietnam. Previously, Vietnam won the gold medal in the women's team chess event but it has not been officially awarded because there is still one more round to play.
In the women's team karate event, the trio of athletes Nguyen Ngoc Tram, Luu Thi Thu Uyen, and Nguyen Thi Phuong competed excellently and won the gold medal with a score of 41.2 points, ranking above Indonesia.
Meanwhile, the three athletes Le Hong Phuc, Pham Minh Duc, Giang Viet Anh won by a narrow margin with 41 points compared to 30.8 points of Indonesia, to win the Gold Medal in the men's team karate event. This is a historic medal for Vietnamese karate, because in previous SEA Games, men's team karate had not achieved this. The athletes were also awarded 500 USD.
The historic gold medal of Vietnamese karate.
In the previous women's individual karate final, Nguyen Thi Phuong met a Filipino fighter but only won a silver medal. However, this is also an encouraging achievement for the Vietnamese karate team in general. Athlete Pham Minh Duc also won a bronze medal in the men's individual karate.
