2022 was a busy year for cybercriminals targeting businesses in Southeast Asia. Latest data from Kaspersky shows that the percentage of web threats blocked by Kaspersky enterprise solutions increased by 45%.
Web threats, or cyber threats, refer to attempts to download malicious objects from malicious or infected websites. These websites are constantly being created on purpose, and infected sites include sites with user-contributed content (such as forums), as well as legitimate sources of information that have been hacked.
At the peak of the pandemic in 2020, Kaspersky prevented more than 10.2 million web attacks on businesses in Southeast Asia. This number decreased slightly in 2021 to more than 9.1 million and increased dramatically to more than 13.8 million in 2022.
Singapore saw the highest increase in web attacks (329%) with 889,093 attacks blocked by Kaspersky's enterprise solutions, compared to 207,175 in 2021.
The increase rate was also recorded in four other Southeast Asian countries: Malaysia (197%), Thailand (63%), Indonesia (46%) and the Philippines (29%).
Only Vietnam recorded a slight decrease (-12%) with more than 2.48 million web incidents in 2022, compared to 2021 (more than 2.82 million incidents).

Yeo Siang Tiong, General Manager for Southeast Asia at Kaspersky, commented: "2023 is the year of full opening up, so we encourage businesses to allocate budgets and resources to strengthen their defenses against the growing cyberattacks. As the security talent shortage remains unsolved, outsourcing experts and comprehensive security solutions will help businesses improve their performance and fill the gap," Mr. Yeo added.
Kaspersky experts recommend that businesses build an attack investigation and response process, and train and support IT security personnel.
To support businesses, the global cybersecurity company offers the Kaspersky Extended Detection and Response (XDR) platform. This platform equips in-house experts with all the technology, threat intelligence, and technical expertise needed to counter complex and targeted cyberattacks.
